all of the victims have now been identified cynthia hurd tywanza sanders, sharonda singleton, susy jackson, referee middleton, and state senator clem pinckney, his desk in the senate is draped in black. cnn is on the ground in washington while we're, all chasing down leads to bring you the latest on the massacre and the investigation. let's start half a block away from the church. that's where we find our own martin savidge. some family members gives's idea how truly awful last night ace shooting was. >> you know this is a community that is the overriding emotion is grief. people are in absolute shock, but for law enforcement, there's also relief because they were greatly fearing that any person who could go into a house of god and murder people could do just about anything. they were afraid for what might come next. that was stop thanks to a husband and wife in north carolina, who saw something wrong. 21-year-old dylann roof is in custody, caught armed with a gun. >> a terrible human being, who would go into a place of worship where people were praying and kill them, is now in custody. >>

as we mentioned, one of those victims was cynthia hurd, she was 54. late today, we spoke to her brother, senator malcolm graham. >> she loved her family, she loved her community. she loved her god. she was the matriarch, if i can use that word, and our mother and father are deceased. so her being the oldest girl she kind of pulled the family together at times when we needed that. >> pelley: why would she have been in that meeting on a wednesday night? >> because she's a christian. we were born and raised in emmanuel a.m.e. church. my mother and father attended that church. we got baptized in that church. so it didn't surprise me that, on a wednesday night, she would be there. >> pelley: i'm sorry about this terrible loss. this is the moment in the community when the first numbing shock gives way to the sorrow of realization. pastor steven singleton was the minister at emmanuel just before reverend pinckney. >> this is evil, and one of the things we embrace in the faith community is that there is a god, and there is evil. to call it anything else is ju

cynthia hurd was the first one this morning. she's a librarian, a woman who was known not only for her desire to want to help people but also working for the housing authority, too. all of these live that's were lost were extraordinary examples of helping and loving others. then came two funerals that were actually held together. that was for 26-year-old tywanza sanders and 87-year-old suzy jackson. suzecy is the aunt of tywanza. he according to witnesses jumped up and tried to protect his aunt when the gun fire broke out. he was killed. she was killed in that bloody rampa rampage. meanwhile, down in columbia, south carolina, there was an attempt by activists to hold down the confederate flag. they succeeded in doing that. one of them climbed up the pole, unhooked it and brought it down. they were immediately taken into custody. it wasn't long after the flag was actually put back up on the flag pole. they've been charged with defacing a monument and both have set bond at $3,000 each. many people across the country are offering t

cynthia hurd, a long-time charleston library was remembered as a tireless public servant and loving family member. it was a joint service for two other shooting victims. susie jackson and tywanza sanders. investigators say sanders stood up and tried to protect his aunt when the alleged shooter opened fire. they say he took her bullet. >>> also today, one activist decided not to wait for a decision on whether to remove the confederate flag from the state capitol in columbia. she was arrested when she climbed the flag pole and removed the flag herself. the flag was hoisted again about 45 minutes later. >>> back here, it was one-stop shopping today for hundreds of people in the nation's capitol looking for affordable housing. residents along with small business owners packed the washington convention center for the annual dc housing expo and home show. polly donaldson says the goal was to connect people with the resources they need to find affordable houses. >> so we have whole exhibit halls full of folks that want to help people become homeowners and find housing in the district. >> the expo
