we asked our dr. jon lapook to tell us more about it. >> reporter: beau biden suffered a mild stroke in 2010, and in 2013 underwent surgery to remove what was described as a small brain lesion, although the spif rick -- spif rick not public. the survival rates of brain cancer vary depending on the type of tumor. most malignant brain tumors are glioblastoma, which are highly aggressive. treatment includes surgery chemotherapy and radiation, but the median survival is about 14 months and two-year survival is only 30%. >> this is great. >> 32-year-old clara guy was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was pregnant with her second daughter in 2012. a year after surgery the cancer returned as an advanced glioblastoma. >> i would likely have approximately six to 18 months. i've got these two young kids. it is not stopping ground for me, and not only, that it felt like a punch in the stomach. so i needed a positive lookout and it was okay, who can we find that can have hope. >> reporter: in 2014, clara was

cnn's chief medical correspondent, dr. sanjay gupta, has more on the illness that took beau booitdeniden's life. >> beau biden was diagnosed with brain sercancer in 2013. he had an operation at that time chemotherapy radiation. he was thought to have no evidence of the disease in his brain anymore in the fall of that year but it came back in early 2015. that is often the nature of these types of tumors brooke. what typically happens is when the tumor comes back it becomes more challenging to treat. they have to decide if they want to do an operation again. about 15,000 people or so a year die of these tumors in the united states brooke. they can be very challenging to treat. we've seen this before with senator ted kennedy. the same type of tumor. there's been some progress made using viral therapies, using genetic therapies things like that but as we know in this case it wasn't soon enough for beau biden. brooke back to you. >> sanjay thank you so much. beau biden's death marks yet another time vice president biden has fac

for that we are joined by dr. natalie azar. is it easy to tell who is at risk for brain cancer? >> no. despite there is research in to the genetic or environmental risk factors for this particular cancer there are no well-defined accepted risk factors for brain cancer, other than perhaps a prior history of radiation to the head. there are some uncommon hereditary syndromes where brain cancer can be seen. generally speaking there are no risk factors and no good screening tests for brain cancer. >> 46 years old. to so many seems so young. does biden's death at that age surprise you? >> unfortunately. no prognosis certainly improves as a young adult. we talk about five-year survival in brain cancer. as one gets older, survival does decrease. brain cancer, in general, can affect people of all ages. we see different types, more prominently in the adult group opposed to the pediatric population but it can affect anyone at any age. >> we mentioned this clean bill of health he was given two years ago. are these reliable given this disease? >> generally speaking, oncologists say a malign
