behind me is the emanuel ame church, mother emanuel, as she is known. the streets in this neighborhood have been reopened finally. the church itself is closed. we do not know when that will reopen. it is needed here. it's a source of strength for the community, has been for 200 years. as for the man who caused so much pain inside of this building behind me, the 21-year-old suspect is back in charleston right now. he's scheduled to make a court appearance here this afternoon. police say it was dylann roof who opened fire inside of the emanuel ame church wednesday night killing nine people during a bible study class. he was apprehended in shelby, north carolina, about four hours away. she was spotted by a woman on the road. he had a gun in his possession when police took him in to custody. it's not clear whether that is the same gun used in in the church shooting. family members are disputing some law enforcement reports that roof's father bought him the .45 caliber handgun for his birthday. some suggest he got the gun for hims. we are getting information

emanuel ame church family. to the family of the pastor and to the greater charleston community. we need to be clear about this. this is not only a desecration of the sanctuary, it's a desecration of the soul of the country. the fact that you can have a criminal come into a bienlble study, an occasion in which those gathered who are there to study scripture, it is their responsibility to be welcoming. so the fact that you have someone with a gun -- this person was likely welcomed given a bible, asked to have a seat and encouraged to be a part of this daily -- i should say weekly ritual. it is morally incomprehensible. this is like a flesh-and-blood obscenity. that being said, we as a country, we as the naacp, charleston as a community where i have family, people will come together. they will be strong. they will demonstrate resilience. this will not cause people to shrink in fear. they will show up at their churches. they will participate in bible study. the naacp being on the ground we will continue to wrap our
