we're told witnesses spotted the two men last weekend walking in the town of irwin. police then say there was another spotting the next day. the two men seen walking towards the pennsylvania border. the u.s. marshals service adding both prisoners to the list of the 15 most wanted fugitives. rick leventhal is live. what can you tell us at this point? >> reporter: law enforcement sources tell me there have been many possible sightings since these two have escaped, but none confirmed. now for the first time the new york state police have publicized two of those sightings giving them some possible credence. convicted killers david sweat and richard matt escaped from the clinton correctional facility around midnight on june 6th. one week later on june 13th police say two men were spotted walking near a rail yard in the town of irwin roughly 300 miles as the crow flies. the next day two men with the same description were seen walking along county route 115 headed toward the pennsylvania border. authorities checked out both leads, talked to witnesses and collected surveilla

the first one on saturday happened in a town called irwin near some train tracks. the next day, a town just south of there called lindley. state police telling moo he they actually have surveillance tapes from one of those two towns from a business that show these two men, both spotted by two different people walking nearby. the surveillance tape wasn't good enough for the police to determine if it was richard matt or david sweat who were walking near this business. they have now sent that tape to a crime lab for further analysis and hope to get some better pictures of those two men this weekend so they can determine if this was an actual sighting. they are taking it seriously. they went down there, spent the week interviewing people. that's how they learned of this surveillance video. they do continue their so muchearch mostly in this area. the foot searches continue here more than 600 miles of trails have been walked by state police. more than 200 unoccupied or camp-type homes have been searched fred. >> these two escapees, we understand they on the u.s. martial'

reports one week ago of two men matching the descriptions of the escaped killer walking the railway in irwin roughly 300 miles south of the prison here in dannemora on june 13th. on the 14th a different witness saw two men with the same description walking along a road in lindley heading in the direction of the pennsylvania border. now investigators checked out both leads this week interviewing witnesses, and the evidence concluded that it would be possible for richard matt and david sweat to make it there if they walked 15 miles a day. new york police followed up on 1500 leads, many similar to these over the past couple of weeks, and so far there's been very little hard evidence to suggest where the two men might be. that's one of the reasons the u.s. marshall service put both men on their 15 most wanted list which is reserved for the worst of the worst. they added a $25,000 bounty to each man's head. so there's now $75,000 for each of them for information leading to their arrest or capture. but again, kelly and arthel we have a new report of a spotting in the southern area of new york stat

police had to check out, one that we heard about was down near the pennsylvania border friendship and irwin, which the police refer to as a credible sighting not confirmed. almost simultaneously, we were getting a sighting at another location back closer to the prison. >> clinton county up there, its with a relatively narrow area where that cabin was, now it's expanded? >> right. the new search areas there's the original search area we have the nine mile perimeter, there were 330 cabins homes they had to check out in is this narrow perimeter, that proved to be unsuccessful now, with the latest sighting they get a sighting at 10:30 in the morning, the police go to check it out, the cabin was burglarized, they check out some of the items in the cabin send it to the lab, and get confirmed that both fugitive's dna matches, this is not just a credible sighting but a confirmed sighting. now, the problem with this is by the time they confirm that and by the time they get hundreds of police officers there, these guys could have walked easily in any direction a long way from that location. we just d
