joey meeks said that the shooter's parents did not want him to have a gun. and i asked him why not, and he said he doesn't really know, just some instinct that they had. but, they did give the shooter some money for his 21st birthday in april, and that they divided up the money that each parent would give him so that he would be able to buy the gun and put it in his name. they did not buy the gun outright for him, but there was a dispute within the family, they didn't want him to have a gun, had some inkling that maybe something bad would happen, but in the end, they appeared to give in, split up the money and gave him the money so he could buy a gun and put it in his own name. between that layer and the layer o of this friend, joey meek, having taken the gun from him at one point and given it back, there are points along the way, anderson, where you think, this really could have been prevented, and whatever was nit way of it, for whatever reason, didn't prevent it. >> brian, appreciate your reporting, drew griffin, as well. just ahead, we'll be focusing att

joey, have at her. how extensive can that prosecution get for someone who may have had a minor role? >> it could get very extensive. let's be clear about it. what you want to do is deter anyone in the future. there's a couple things at stake here. the first is to bring these two back to justice so that they don't engage in any crimes. they're not nice guys. one shot a sheriff's deputy, the other dismembered their boss, the former boss who was elderly and so what you want to do is you want to send a message out there that anyone who even considers assisting people behind bars to get out, you're going to be held accountable. and the law makes you accountable. why? it's a d felony, punishable by up to seven years in jail and it says if you introduce contraband into a facility -- which is anything not allowed in a facility but particularly here where it's dangerous contraband that can help people escape -- you know what? you have to suffer the consequences and i think she will. >> all right. so midwin, she

joey meek and his mom kim saw roof just tuesday. they say he always had a gun with him. >> what kind of guns did he have? >> 45 glock. >> reporter: this is a small town, tight community. neighbors say they saw roof all the time in and out of the country store, but nothing seemed suspicious. but earlier this year, his bizarre behavior leading to run-ins with police. in february roof wearing all black arrested at a mall after asking employees out of the ordinary questions, accused of illegally possessing a prescrip drug roof telling police his parents were pressuring him to get a job. just two months later roof arrested again at that same mall for trespassing. tonight friends say they are shocked by this ending. the friends say they do not believe roof was a member of any organized hate groups. they call him a loaner and they tell me he dropped out of school in the 9th grade.

let's talk about with criminal defense attorney joey jackson. joey, the guy confessed. how do you craft a defense for him? sure. good morning. as a defense attorney, two types of cases really. those you could prevail and ones you cannot. the ones you can prevail on, you challenge everything, ballistics. you challenge it because you have a shot. in the alternative cases like this are not winnable and that is the reality check you have with your client. why? because there is a confession. because there are witnesses. because there's surveillance and because it was you. in those cases, you go down the list of what might prevail. you look at, you know, choice a. is there some type of mental defense that we can proffer? in this case, i don't think so for a variety of reasons. there is the gun. there is plotting. carrying that gun there and staying there for an hour and there is the killing and making statements that are outrageous concerning why he had to do this. then the consciousness of guilt associated with his flight. so i don't think that you could establish -- you did

joining us to talk about this, joey jackson. joey, let's first go with just talking specifically about the case and the federal charges. what we're learning about these potential three victims, will they have any impact on this case or these charges? >> well, good morning, victor. here's the issue. the bottom line is that there's something that needs to be proved in the indictment. and that's twofold. the first issue that needs to be proven is whether or not he lied to the fbi. that issue has nothing at all to do certainly with prior victims of any type of abuse, so his lawyers are going to be arguing that that shouldn't be factored in the actual charges or in any type of sentencing. the second issue has to do with the structuring of any type of transactions that were financial, and certainly that issue as well, the attorneys will argue has very little to do with any type of transactions that were structured. obviously the whole purpose that those transactions were structured in that way, victor, was to evade the requirements an
