joyce tilly, the prison tailor mitchell and her husband lyle. and we learned the correctional facility has been shut down. and the search area has now changed. the latest on all of it from our randi kaye who joins us. let's begin with the search area. shifting again. do they think these guys are still in the area of the prison? >> reporter: they do anderson, and they're certainly hoping so. they've already searched 16 square miles, about 10,000 acres. the area is shifting and that really is based on the 1,400 leads that they have now. the information that they're getting from those leads is telling them to shift to a different area. but still here nearby the prison they're shifting the roadblocks they're shifting the k9 units. the lead investigator told us they don't have any hard evidence that these guys have left town that they're not in this area. they don't have any reports of a stolen car that they may have taken to get out of town. they're working off the evidence that they have which tells them that they are still right here. and one last

have to say about joyce mitchell? >> reporter: well anderson this is the woman police believe was meant to drive the getaway car but never showed up at the prison when the fugitives escaped. she has been arrested. she will be arraigned tonight. then the woman who worked at a maximum security prison will likely be booked into this county jail. all of this going down today. investigators say, that she may have provided these two inmates with tools. that sunny washe was the one that brought the two convicted killers the tools they may have needed. blades drill bits eyeglasses with lights affixed to them. as soon as the two escaped, investigators zeroed on this woman that there were previous suspicion she's had a relationship with both of the men. investigators have said she cooperated over the course of the last week speaking to them almost every day. and in fact anderson the clinton county district attorney said he believed she was being so open and so readily available to them because she might be feeling some sense of

things are moving very fast in the case of joyce mitchell tonight. we are told she is under arrest, she is in police custody, and has been or is going to be arraigned very soon. she is going to be charged or has been charged with providing material assistance to the inmates. richard matt and david sweat. also charged with criminal facilitation in the fourth degree. these are both felonies. we did get word earlier from the d.a. andrew wily that she could be charged. what we do know also from sources is that joyce mitchell according to what the sources, law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation, are telling us she provided these two inmates with hacksaws eyeglasses with lights affixed to them with drill bits as part of this alleged plot to help them escape from the prison. we also know that she had a relationship with both of these men. again, this according to sources familiar with the investigation. it is not clear which one of the two she favored. we have been told earlier that she was the subject of a complaint for having some kind of

we will speak to a friend and neighbor of joyce and lyle mitchell. first, we begin our coverage with alexandra field in new york. the district attorney moments ago at that microphone announcing the charges of joyce mitchell. what more did he say about her? >> reporter: good evening. the district attorney saying authorities have been talking to joyce mitchell for days. she has been cooperating. she's under arrest tonight. they say the information that she provided in the interviews has been relevant and helpful to the search. 51-year-old joyce mitchell is now facing charges for helping two convicted killers escape from a maximum security prison in upstate new york. law enforcement officials tell cnn mitchell gave richard matt and david sweat blades drill bits and eyeglasses with lights attached. now investigators are zeroing in on whether anything else helped the prisoners escape. questioning mitchell's husband who may have known about the plan. he worked at the prison's tailor shop. >> we have information coming through through interviews through our

they know what joyce did. they know the role the other correction officer played, you know, by breaking some rules but not actually knowing about the escape. i think they know 95% of it. i think there could be some gaps he'd still in. but i don't think there's blockbuster information that he holds that's crucial to either one of the prosecutions of those two defendants or to any vast conspiracy outside the walls because i don't think it exists. i mean, the vast conspiracy couldn't even get them a car ride out of the woods there. so i don't think it really exists. >> i want to bring in arthur roderick. what do you think? do you agree with jim that there's really not much more information to get out of david sweat? >> yeah, i absolutely agree. i think the only information that would be nice to get out of david sweat would satisfy our curiosity as to where he went after they came out of the manhole cover. i think we said from day one that, you know, that planning this escape, the inside planning was really unique

this news of this murder plot against joyce's mitch, if she knew about it. how does this complicate things for her legally? could this bring additional charges against her? >> her legal situation is about as dark as it can get. she has one option which is somehow to help them find these two fugitives. other than that she really is not of any use to the authorities, and they are going to throw the book at her. they may well have an additional charge if she somehow involved in a conspiracy to hurt her husband. simply by helping the escape if it is true she supplied the power tools if she did this she is in such a world of hurt from that that there is no way she can dig herself out. >> anthony, her alleged relationship with both of these guys obviously that's something corrections officers are trained to watch out for to try to you know prevent. if she's a civilian in this environment, does that make it all the more difficult? is it a different form of training? >> well the thing is with civilians is that they come in with -- they want to help. that's their pre

did you know joyce mitchell? >> no. i initially thought i did but she came about a year after i left. >> what is that experience like when prisoners are allowed to work in the shop. are you supervised all the time or a pretty free experience where you're allowed to interact with the civilian workers? >> the inmates are basically supervised. it is kind of lax from my experience. as i said it is lax so you can interact with the civilians. >> what does that mean? the person the guard who is supposed to be supervising you turns a blind eye? >> i wouldn't say the guard turns a blind eye or anything like that. however, i would say that the guard is not overly security conscious due to, you know everyday routine and the mo knotty of the situation where nothing is happening day after day. the same routine day after day. people get kind of relaxed. >> we heard that. they get complacent because you think it is a maximum security prison. they haven't had a escape in over 100 years. you don't have to be on top of it. in your experi

but, it's not just joyce michelle. now prosecutors are also taking a hard look at her husband. >> we're not really reaching out to him. he is obviously a person of interest because of the -- his obvious relationship with joyce michelle. and he did work -- works at the correctional facility. works in the tailor shop as well as maintenance provider. so you know, of course we are looking at him as well. >> the brendon lyons gets us. i don't get this one. why are they looking at the husband if they say he has nothing to do with it. why are they suspicious of him. it sounds more like she is cheating on the husband and got two young guys in the prison so why are they even looking at the husband? >> i'm not sure. we saw his name surface in a police document that listed all a the contacts, all at people that they have reached out that they have examined as possible get away drivers or people who may have assisted them. in that document it said that the husband may have assisted in the escape. we don't know when that was dated
