then finally, richard matt found. now our cnn producer shimon perez filling in key details how all of this went down in the area police have been so heavily focused on. we're learning that at 1:30 in the afternoon near route 30, a series of shots were fired. around 2:00 near 1:19 another series of shots were fired. that's when somebody discovered a bullet hole in their camper but the driver didn't realize at the time that the camper had been shot at. after that we've learned that police then did a sweep of that area and that is where they approached richard matt. sources are telling cnn that matt actually approached law enforcement officers with a shotgun. we know that he was ultimately shot by police. but key here is this detail wolf. law enforcement officials telling cnn that they found two sets of tracks in that area. they of course believe the other set of tracks would plan to david sweat where there's now a very intense search for the sole fugitive still on the loose. >> stand by alexandra. we're going to get bac

but we have the autopsy results from richard matt's autopsy. and as you mentioned at the top, this cause of death was severe skull fractures and skull injuries due to three gunshot wounds to the head. he was also according to franklin county coroner, apparently in pretty good health without showing any severe signs of bug infestation. he had been fully dressed, they said in outdoor clothing. there were reports as you mentioned that he wreaked of alcohol. we haven't been able to confirm that either. the d.a. says that the autopsy results, the toxicology results are expected in a couple of weeks. but again law enforcement sources confirmed to fox that david sweat has has been shot he's in custody. we don't know if shots were fired. we don't know if he was arm. but again authorities have presumed from the beginning that he was carrying a weapon that he likely stole from one of the hunting cabins that the two two men have been hanging out in. >> we have judge jeanine pirro on the phone, one of the first to get the news that david sweat has been sho

we're talking about richard matt and david sweat. and whether or not they were allowed to make -- they were able to make this break that way. authorities are analyzing the guest registries of hotels near the prison where they escaped 17 days ago. they are looking for anyone who knew richard matt or david sweat and may have stayed there in the last six to eight months. this comes after the kind of potential breakthrough that investigators have been hoping for. a law enforcement source telling our deborah feyerick that dna from richard matt and david sweat has been found inside of a burglarized cabin 20 miles from the prison. a witness on saturday reported seeing someone running into the woods right near that cabin. let's talk about it. the dna evidence and the new information that we're getting in with lawrence koblinski, a process for of john jay college in new york city. this is like a movie. how could the tools get to the prisoners? >> it's unbelievable. the rules that prisons have to work under were somehow bypassed. this is perfe

richard matt was shot and killed by a border patrol agent on friday. police closed in on him after getting calls of shots fired. matt was shot when he refused to put his hands up. joining me now and we're live in new york and that's where the search is intensifying. tell us where we stand at this hour. we know that there's a contained er perimeter. are we getting closer to finding him? >> reporter: well there are no sights of david sweat at all so searches by land boat and helicopter. you're seeing live pictures of a checkpoint. you can not go into the tightest mountain area unless you live there, and even if you live there you're stopped and questioned and your vehicle is searched. now this all began and it came down starting about 2:00 yesterday afternoon. >> after three weeks on the run escaped killer richard matt was shot and killed in new york. >> you never want to see anyone lose their life but i would remind people that mr. matt was an escaped murder from a state prison. mr. matt killed two people who we know about. >> after a tip from the drive

officials tell us richard matt has been shot and dead. again richard matt has been shot and killed. he was one of the two prisoners who escaped from the clinton correctional facility 21 days ago. he was reportedly shot near lake titus in new york. about 20 miles from the prisoner. and from the phone, john, what can you tell us about the scene up there. >> reporter: i'm trying to make my way to lake titus. there are a lot of police coming along the highway. lights and sirens going and at certain points which we've seen the past couple of days here along places where the road crosses a creek, there are police p with shotguns watching these areas. they have been watching especially nature trails along railroads, anything that sort of goes through the woods. i can tell you that this thing happened very quickly. it came together very quickly. of course they had the lead the that there was a break in in a camp up here in this area near owls head which is south of malone over the weekend. they had dna evidence that the two men had been there over the weekend. but then things seemed to have

the dramatic conclusion came nearly 48 hours after richard matt was shot and killed by a border patrol team on friday. anna werner has been covering this manhunt for weeks. she is back with us tonight. anna, what do we know? >> reporter: jeff, the latest we just heard confirmed is that they are moving david sweat. he is en route total bannee medical center from this hospital here in malone, new york. he was wounded. one law enforcement source indicated to cbs news they believe he may have been shot twice, in fact. and here's how that all happened. we're told by new york state police that a technical sergeant saw a suspicious man walking down the road in the town of constable, new york. new that's just about five miles south of the canadian border. we're not exactly sure what transpired precisely after he saw him but we do know that the officer wound up shooting david sweat and then they took him in custody and took him brought him here to the hospital in malone, new york, where he has been in the emergency room. again we now understand he's become transferred to the albany medical cent

in terms of how that hamburger meat was passed through to richard matt. it was through a guard. it's a violation of prison policy for that meat not to go through a metal detector. his client did not know what was in that frozen chunk much meat. he at this point is under investigation. a little more information coming to us about joyce mitchell we've been hearing so much about her and her husband. she had personally vouched for richard matt and david sweat for several months bringing in baked goods, giving them to guards there at the prison these two inmates were good guys and could be trusted and in fact we're also hearing sources telling us that joyce mitchell went as far as going to prison officials and convincing them and saying it would be a good idea to move david sweat's cell next to richard matt's cell. we all know what happened shortly after that. we reached out to prison officials to get their comments on all of this. they said this is an ongoing investigation, they were not able to comment on it at this time. but, you know today when we heard so much from lyle mitchell
