nbc tracy potts is live with us. can they senate and house compromise on them? >> there's got to be transition time between this program that was already in place, the government collecting the phone records and turningrogram over to the phone companies. how long is that transition time? the house said six. the senate wants to double that to a year. they want to change this usa freedom act to add in a provision that says the phone companies have to notify the government in advance if they plan to keep the records less than 18 months. all those changes we're getting indications from the house they are not going to go for it. they want to vote for what they passed or not. the changes may actually be the hang up here. the schedule for now is a preliminary vote this morning and possibly a final vote as early as this afternoon on that usa freedom act that would replace the provisions of the patriot act that expired. we could actually see some votes on this today but the thing to watch for today is whether or not those changes are going to get in the way of them movin

he was forced to move to tracy and as a result, he is now living in tracy, commuting to sunnyvale because there are no jobs in tracy and no housing in sunnyvale. when you change the dynamics so that somebody instead of commuting three miles, is commuting 60 miles that has a dramatic effect on transportation, for instance. shafer: and what about in cupertino? i assume it's the same thing. sinks: yeah, absolutely. we have a lot of folks coming in looking for housing. our vaunted school system is a big draw and people pay a premium to live in cupertino school districts, but the housing is certainly challenging and we're also experiencing these large jumps in rent. shafer: and, so, the solution to high prices is more housing. to what extent, john in, say, mountain view are you building more housing? can you possibly build enough housing? mcalister: we've just completed our general plan and part of the general plan i identified five growth areas. a lot of it was along transit -- el camino or caltrans. and so, when we're putting these developments, coming in, we're encouraging the developers or
