the mexican kingpin known as el chapo slipped out of prison for a second time. the escape the white house is sure to be watching closely today. kristin welker has more. >> good morning. we have reached out to the white house for reaction so far no response. but we know a manhunt is underway after mexican drug lord el chapo one of the most no story use crime figures escaped a maximum security prison overnight. he spent 13 years on the run until his celebrated capture in february of 2014. the 60-year-old had undergone facial reconstruction surgery. this is not the first time he's been on the lam. in 2001 he escaped the mexican prison in a laundry cart. flights have been suspended from local airports about 50 miles west of mexico city. u.s. officials will want to know how the crime boss was able to escape. prior to his arrest he was wanted in six different u.s. courts for smuggles billions of dollars of cocaine, meth heroin and marijuana across the border. now again, sheinelle we're checking with the white house and the justice department for reaction to this stunn

mexican drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman. he remains at large after a daring escape from a mexican high security prison over the weekend. now reports say he is taunting the authorities and the mexican government is now offering $3.8 million for his capture. joining us now for analysis is jan albert huson, a contributor for fox news latino. he visited the prison where el chapo was being detained. and also with us is the contributor editor and a former california senior intelligence analyst on border and drug trafficking in the security. welcome all of you. jan, let me start with you. explain to me this particular individual. this is supposed to be the highest security prison they have. how could this have happened? >> well, so far, everyone's assuming that chapo's escape was a result of internal corruption. if you look at the way he was able to escape it's a one-mile-long tunnel that ends in a building that was specifically built for the purpose of allowing him to escape. such an operation takes so much resources and so much m

i like it. >>> thousands of mexican police and soldiers searching for el chapo. still no sign of the drug king pin who slipped into the tunnel in the shower stall last weekend. thousands are questioned about his escape. the federal police force chief has been fired. we are getting an inside look at the end of the tunnel where el chapo slipped to freedom. here is nick valencia. >> reporter: christine, we are been trying to gain entry into the home where el chapo is said to emerge. we were finally granted access. escorted in by mexican military and the attorney general's office in mexico. ushered into a room that was by all means, the work shed. we saw power tools plugged in and cinder blocks around us. it seems the moment they were done building the tunnel they gave the signal to el chapo and he was on his way. we dropped down ten feet on the initial ladder into a small space, walked another few feet and approached a second ladder into a deeper portion of the tunnel 20 feet down. a magnificent feat of engineering. it seemed like a professional job. coke bottles on

and through all of that el chapo found a way to burrow out under the noses of mexican authorities and get to this freedom tunnel off in the distance here. and go completely free. how did he manage to do that? well first of all he tapped into the expertise of his gang. which has been known to build all sorts of tunnels for transporting drugs and eluding enemies. they started beneath a shower. one of the few places where he wasn't being monitored by video 24 hours a day. he went 33 feet straight down and then when you look at the details of this tunnel you. see an engineering marvel. this thing was 5 1/2 feet tall his height. 2 1/2 feet wide. he could simply walk through it. it was reinforced with wood to keep track of all the structural integrity, whether or not ground walter was water was seeping in. a lighting system. see what they were doing. a ventilation system no gasses that could overcome anyone there. they had a track along the bottom of so it they could transport out on some sort of cart or motorcycle. not clear what they were doing. what we do know in the end this thing was a

but at the same time the mexican government had kind of moved on once "el chapo" was captured and was beginning to focus on other cartels in different parts of the country that were more of a priority. and so i don't think there had been a -- there was never a huge diminution in drugs coming across the border. you can take out the head of the organization and the organization will continue to function. >> the president had apparently conveyed that this escape is a real blow to that government that administration's efforts because apparently he had taken some credit for weakening some of the cartels. is there a feeling that he had indeed helped weaken this cartel especially with the arrest of "el chapo," because even today in paris the mexican president has said that this escape is quote, an affront to the state. >> yeah. look it was a huge victory to capture "el chapo." the only thing you could compare it to is president obama and the killing of osama bin laden. this was somebody who really appeared untouchable. and to have him get away now in a situation in which everybody has been w
