tom foreman is standing by for us. to find this 2300 miles away from the original search area, but experts say it's perfectly possible debris did drift that far? >> it sounds impossible, and 2300 is the smallest measurement. remember we've been talking about search areas over here off the coast of australia, and now we're talking about finding this debris over here. yes, at least 2300 miles away. the width of the united states or more, and yet take a look at this animation that scientists put together. if you were to drop something in here, what would the natural currents do? the natural currents in fact do push steadily over this direction, yes they may meander about, but as a program something dropped in here is going to start flowing this way. we know this plane has been missing for about 500 daze. what that translates to and what were you dropped there would need to moffat a rate of 4 1/2 miles a day to be here by this time. well, some of the currents out here can moffat 5 miles an hour, so the math works out, the

our tom foreman is taking a look at that. tom, you have been looking at where this part of debris could be coming from and what we're learning more about this. tell us more. >> what we have really is a case of evidence stacking up about this piece of debris ever since it showed up. it's roughly the right size that it ought to be. we have some idea now if we look at this piece of equipment and we compare it to a model of this plane, which is essentially what the engineers are doing because they know it very, very well, they're saying if you rotate it around, it would fit very nicely along the back edge of one of these wings like this. it's where it would normally fit. they see other details to tell them it fits there. if we went through a list of criteria here, why is anticipation so high? it is the right type. it appears to be something that belongs on a 777. it is the right color. it is the right condition meaning it's all covered with all sorts of barnacles which would be consistent with floating in water for close to 500 d

. >>> i want to bring it cnn's tom foreman. he's been looking at the flaperon, the piece of wing, the clues it may reveal. what are you finding out? >> the front end of this does does not seem to have as much -- there are several theories as to why that could be the case. if we take about a plane that was way up in the air in a high-speed dive because it either ran out of fuel or somebody pointed it down, the flaperon would normally be stowed this way, level like this. as that plane went shrieking towards the ground to more than 6 hundred, maybe pushing 700 that had create tremendous turbulence on the back edge and could do a lot of damage. here's another possibility. what about the that it was trying to put down, in that case the flaperon would be deployed to increase the wing area while it lost speed. how it would and when that water hit this right here it could again do tremendous damage and maybe a lot imhere as it rips it away from the plane. and lastly the idea we've talked about a lot, what if there was an explosion or c
