now my colleague, hoda was there recently and filed this report about how people who are not in the public but the private sector, which has suffered most of the layoffs have tried to take care of themselves create business for themselves and become their own employers. >> reporter: it's a model of self organization. a factory that was doomed if not for the engine newty of its workers. so it went from from producing building materials, to making environmental friendly soaps and cleaning products. >> translator: we were working with a lot of chemicals before so we decided to change. we wanted to produce something different that is cheap and affordable for the families and people. >> reporter: the products are now sold in several european countries with a label proudly stating made by workings who refused to fall into unemployment and depression because back in august 2011 they had effectively lost their jobs even though never officially fired. what happened here is very telling about how things went wrong in greece where there's often a fine line between personal interest and business. the

hoda and i were kind of angry. when you enroll your child in kindergarten you expect to answer a few personal questions. >> they have a lot of applications for a lot of schools, even public schools. but there was a mom of three who was so shocked about how personal they got. >> kara payek. >> she wrote about her experience that the "new york times." here's one of the questions on the application. was the type of birth you had vaginal or cesarean. >> and kara wondered why an answer to that question was necessary if the baby who resulted from that birth was already five years old and it's none of anybody's business unless you care to tell someone personally. that is so invasive and so long. >> and i don't know what their intent was but she thought it was an absurd question so she met with -- >> absurdly inappropriate. she's right. >> she met with the school head nurse and the district medical advisor. here's what the nurse responded? >> a cord wrapped around the neck depriving a child of oxygen or fetal distress coul

let's go to hoda abdel-hamid. there's a polling station behind you. what are people there saying about the referendum and what it means for them. >> well they say that it's important, but, you know by and large whether they are voting yes or no they have doubts whether anything will change come tomorrow. this is different than athens in the sense that you haven't had the build up to this day. there's little posters around the streets, there's little campaigning. if not for the mayor out in support of the yes vote. a lot of the people i spoke to said that simply because it's a more conservative city than athens and they say they have been suffering from a crisis, in the sense it's an industrial city, and a lot of industries have shut down and moved to other countries, and people have been living with that. there are less civil servants who helle on government, and it's difficult, however, to go to a yes or no vote. they've been asking over and over, and people saying we speak to friends and family and the opinions are split. so this is a situation wher

hoda travelled to a port city to see how people are coping. >> reporter: for 20 years his coffee shop was the pulse of the neighbourhood. full during the good tiles, barely anyone here -- times, barely anyone here during these days of austerity. >> no hardly anyone here. >> reporter: how do you keep it open. >> i don't pay. electricity, thatting. no pay. >> reporter: most of the street has shut down. no one is investing in new businesses. >> where are you look, there's a seen of abandonment. doors are shut windos are scruffy, times there's a phone number in case someone is interested. by the look of it no one it. >> they had to down size. recently they let go of two employees. >> of course i was upset. they were with us for 20 years something easy to say. unknown workers, hoping for something better. i'd rather hope than. >> reporter: it's about family history, his parents opened the shops 50 years ago. the place is filled with childhood memories. for the last five years i'm forced to dig into my savings, i grew up here. i have been working 35 years. i have you retire in two or three.
