why lafayette? it does not seem at this point the shooter had any sort of direct connection to this particular town. you heard law enforcement agencies, law enforcement representative earlier describe him as a drifter. why did he drift here? that's one of the questions that they're working to answer. and of course, the major question that's still outstanding here is why. why at all? why stand up in a movie theater about 25 people gathered to watch "train wreck." didn't say much. about 25 minutes into it law enforcement says he just opened fire. pulled out a handgun, fired off at least 13 rounds. they think that they have all of the kayings. but they're looking to look to make sure they have all of the casings and he was in the process of reloading. we found out a short time ago as one police officer arrived on the scene, they saw the gunman leaving the right side of the theater. the officer said that he sees the gunman. the gunman then goes back inside. it's at that point, law enforcement believes h

this movie theater is in the heart of lafayette. lafayette is known as the happiest place in the south. this is a very happy place. so this hits us even harder. multiple police are on the scene. multipolice present, multiple ambulances and the police on the scene are heavily armed. not just one and two but multiple people with rifles and they are not letting people traverse these roads near this movie theater. this is a very active scene. all very worried about their loved ones and very worried about the safety and thor is end of this place. >> we know that the shooter has been confirmed to have either shot himself or been shot by somebody else. have you spoken to anybody inside the theater? in fact, anyone inside any of the theaters. what were they told? are police checking those lingering outside the building? what is the tempo right now on the fwrounlground and what are people saying? >> it was a very quick pace. when i came outside i saw multiple people being brought outside and put into an ambulance. i can confirm three people

last night was an awful night for lafayette. i was at a hospital meeting with family members who were rushing to different hospitals to find out if loved ones had been shot tragically if they had been killed. hoping for the best possible news. this is end of summer break. people are going to see a comedy in last few days of s ofs of vacation. amazing stories of heroism. law enforcement were running into the theater towards the danger as they could hear gunshots. appears the gunman tried to escape with the crowd. he had his car parked nearby so he could kb getget out. he went back inside and shot himself. who know what is else he may have planned. couple of teachers i'll share with you quick. i visited with family and friends as they were treated at hospital. one teach jumped in front of another and may have saved her life by doing that. both got injured. the second teacher that got shot many the leg managed to pull the fire alarm. who knows how many lives she may have saved. awful, awful night for our community and country. amaz

why was he in lafayette? what had brought him to that community? we know that he was a drifter, that he didn't seem to have a permanent address since that eviction just a year ago but what would have brought him to lawsuit? was there a system that he was guided by a belief system some perverse ideology that he was adhering to? we've been looking through his social media to try to understand some of what he may have thought. police have not identified a motive. what we do know is he was politically active. the sheriff said that. that had he perhaps even run for local office of some sort in columbus georgia, and his online activity does seem to reflect that. we don't see any posts beyond 2013 but prior to that he was active on a political forum posting hundreds of messages on a variety of topics and he does write some things about himself on that forum that are worth looking at right now. he says he has no political affiliation but goes on to say that he believes the u.s. will be mad max in five years. that's a reference to the post apocalyptic film

let me go back to craig melvin who is in lafayette. craig, what jumps out at you from the press conference that we have just heard? >> well one question was answered. we talked about it at the taughtop of the broadcast, whether the gun was purchased legally. we heard at the beginning of the news conference, it was in fact purchased legally back in 2014 in alabama. now, what's interesting about that, as we heard from a sheriff earlier, sheriff here in alabama, who said back in 2006 the shooter was denied a concealed carry permit because of a criminal domestic violence complaint and an arson charge. so that struck me. we also learned that there are five victims who are still in the hospital. and we also found out that there were two more shell casings found in the past few hours. originally it was thought to be 13. he said there were 15 shell casings found. according to the police chief there, based on what he saw, based on some of the smells inside the theater, he described the stench of blood. it's also striking reverend al that this w

been in lafayette since early july as far as we can tell. we served a swaurnt on that motel room at about 4:30 this morning. he was driving a 1995 blue lincoln continental. we found wigs and disguises. and -- parked right outside an exit door of the theater. it is apparent that he was intent on shooting and then escaping. what happened is the quick law enforcement response forced him back into the theater. at which time he shot himself. no devices were found in his vehicle. no devices were found in the theater. as far as we know, 140-caliber handgun is involved. that weapon has been recovered. it appears that at least 13 rounds were fired during the he was in the theater discharging the weapon. the victims are macy bro. st years of age. died on scene. >> jillian johnson, 31 years of age, died at the hospital. of the nine victims that were injuries, two are have been released, one is in kril krit cal conditions. quick thinking prevented further deaths. we are appealing to the public to contact law enforcement if they think they knew the shoot

my colleague nbc's craig melvin is in lafayette. craig, the first responders probably prevented more bloodshed by getting there so quickly. what else do we know about this shooter and about this investigation? >> no doubt at all, peter. we just heard from the police chief there. he said those officers just so happened to be in the parking lot on duty when the call came in. they were i side in less than 60 seconds. it also sounds like perhaps the shooter had intended to wreak even more havoc and was in the process of reloading when he saw the officers and then decided at that point to turn the gun on himself. that news conference that just wrapped up let's recap the highlights from that. we found out there in addition to the wigs and glasses that were found in his car, the police chief said that he left the keys on top of one of his tires as well. in addition to that we found out that they have spent the better part of the past 12 hours or so talking to folks inside the theater, roughly 160 people. they've talked to of the 300 people
