sr., and it is known as john brown parallels. it was published in january of 1859, and this letter was written with the intent for it to be published in a newspaper. it was basically john brown's paralleling two incidents in bleeding kansas and justifying his actions in missouri. two plantations were attacked by john brown and his sons and followers, and one slave master was murdered. lettern brown in this said earlier in 1858, may of 1858, 11 to 12 pre-state men were taken prisoner, herded into a ravine, and shot down as pro--slavery men. this is known as a massacre. five of those men died. in this parallel, john brown is after the death of this --the governorr of missouri, the president of the united states, james buchanan, issued a reward for the capture of john brown for the death, the murder of this slave master in missouri. john brown argues nothing has bring these pro-slavery men that slaughtered tose five pre-state men justice, and that is why it is known as john brown's parallels. abraham lincoln, when he visited in 1859

decision that included 200 plaintiff's total, so just by history, we refer to it as the brown family, where it is a piece of a larger story. the facilities here in the monroe school were excellent. when a lot of people walk in the building, if they're old enough to remember going to kindergarten in a school like this, it looks like what they attended whether they were white or black. but he was simply one of the 13 parents who was recruited, and nationwide, there were actually five cases that were a part of the brown the facility was excellent, so this serves to remind people that education is about being in a safe place, where you can learn from people who are sympathetic to you and can understand you, and that is exactly what was happening at this monroe school. this was an excellent experience, and then when they go to see exhibits of what schools were like in south carolina, virginia, the district of columbia, and they see what african-american communities and endure, they could see. be verytopeka, you'd hard pressed to determine whether white students are african-american studen

frank, brendan tellen, who was murdered by ali mohammed brown, brown was charged with terrorism. that's big. that's different, isn't it? >> that is big and quite honestly, your reporting may have done, may have played a significant role in getting people to open their eyes in terms of kegting these dots. so, i think it's significant. at the end of the day, hopefully, he gets the death penalty regardless of the crime. it's important because it was an act of terrorism. hopefully this, when others are looking to that sort of activity, it should serve as a deterrent. >> the awful thing is we don't even know it's terrorism until we have a string of homicides. >> preemption is the most important thing you could do in this case. it's very, very difficult to do, particularly when you've got as both catherine and frank have pointed out, ways of convincing young people to join this movement when you can't even name the movement. >> what is with them? radical islam -- you and i know what it is. it's like pornography. i know it when i see it. this is terrorism. radical islamic terrorism. the

brown may not have been all that innocent that day. we saw the surveillance video from inside the store. prosecutors say he robbed the store, he pushed the clerk, we heard that he knobbed off at officer wilson and the grand jury said he reached for the gun. this is what we know from facts we are getting from within the legal system. whether or not you agree with those facts or not. so how do you sort of take some of those facts that are out there and still be able to push forward with this movement to make an impact on younger generations of black men coming into this movement and growing up within this movement, what do they take from this? >> let's take a step back and think about the context of what is legal. at one point slavery was legal. at one point jim crow was legal. just because it's legal doesn't mean it's moral. also doesn't mean that shooting a black kid is actually moral as well. so when we get to the nuances ns around the language, it becomes more problematic, black communities see the trend that continues to happen over

marking the anniversary of michael brown's death. this benefit one of many this weekend was organized by his father, mike brown, senior. backstage, there was reflection of what changed michael brown's life and eventually this city. >> in every city, whenever a cop kills a black person that's unarmed unjustly people are going to respond. >> reporter: around ferguson, reminders are everywhere. it was right here that michael brown was shot after being confronted by police for shoplifting. it's a makeshift memorial. federal authorities have cleared darren wilson for any wrongdoing. but there was an investigation of the city, fueling sometimes violent reaction to brown's arrests. sympathy marches spread around the country as did stories of other unarmed black men killed by police. the slogan black lives matter, brown's mother reflects. >> my son's death has a bigger purpose but it has given me a voice to let people know we are dealing with some social injustice. >> i'd like to introduce mr. anderson. >> ferguson now has a new police chief

the brown v. board of education case was filed in district court. the brown v. board of education case is a small these of a much larger case that started back in 1930's that0's and was part of the national association for the advancement 's shovel toeople overturn segregation in public education. they were attempting to file cases that would eventually lead to overturning a case called plessy versus ferguson, a supreme court decision in 1896 that allowed the state of louisiana to segregate railcars by race. once the supreme court made the decision that that was constitution, you saw an explosion of loss in the south, that permitted -- of laws that permitted segregation in all sectors of life. the naacp was attempting to overturn the president. they could try to do it in one case, but if they lost, that would the end of their tents. beginning in the 1930's, they began to file cases to chip away at that president. the strategy was to and segregation in law schools and graduate schools and worked on

willie brown was the target of fbi investigations in the past. it is interesting somebody -- an insider this week noted to me there was never this kind of suspicion around mayor gavin newsom, for all his enemies in town and all his faults. but i do think that, you know, there have been questions around ed lee and his association with willie brown and with chinatown powerhouse rose park ever since he was appointed our mayor and decided to run after promising he wouldn't. there were multiple investigations and accusations leveled against the independent expenditure account that pushed him to run that was very heavily involved with bruin and pak. there was actually allegations that that same group was essentially engaging in voter fraud around the election by filling out ballots for people in chinatown. >> he's not running unopposed. there's election in november there's no one running against him. >> that's the fascinating thing. unless we see some explosive indictment, i don't think this is going to affect his political career in the short-term. yo

this weekend the crowds of people would gather to celebrate brown's life in a march lead by brown's father. the 18-year-old's death sparked days of unrest and violent protest on the streets of ferguson. another rally is planned for today at the spot where michael brown was killed. with our partners of cnn they take a closer look at the michael brown case one year later. >> reporter: the scars of protesters wiped clean waiting for progress. this is ferguson, one year after white police officer darren wilson shot and killed unarmed black teenager michael brown, unleashing months of protest. though wilson was not indicted by the grand jury and he was cleared of civil rights violations, becoming a symbol for something more that black lives are treated as dispensable in american society. >> regardless of if you saw what happened or not, it was the blatant disrespect that people feel because they left his body here for four and a half hours, that is really what charges people up. >> reporter: film maker and ferguson resident chris phillips lives in the apartment complex where brown was killed, s

wilson had confronted brown as a suspect in a convenience store robbery. the shooting touched off weeks of protests and galvanized the black lives matter movement. among the changes in ferguson in the past year-- more diverse leadership: a new interim police chief and city manager, who are black. a new presiding judge for its municipal court, and two new, black representatives elected to the city council. for the first time in a city that is two-thirds black, african americans hold half the seats in the city council. earlier, i spoke with one of those new members, wesley bell, about changes in ferguson over the past year, and changes still to come. >> councilman bell what's changed in the last year? >> a lot of things. one, i think there's an awareness of these issues. a lot of these social issues that predated ferguson. that are regional that they're -- that are national and we're having more conversations about -- about privilege and tensions between law enforcement and some of our communities, particularly our young people. there's a lot of things to be

>> no, i don't think michael brown died in vain. this is a young man who in his short time on this earth his impact is still being felt a year later after his death. what happened to mike brown that day resonated with so many people because it was another case of an unarmed young man being killed when we think there could have been deescalation tactics, it could have been another way to handle that i th incident that didn't result in anybody being hurt. so i think one of the things that's happened in the last year is to spark the conversation about how we police in this country. and that think that's an important first step. i think enough progress hasn't been made yet in the last year abry pairing some of the things we've identified with how we place the country but we've had important steps and being able to get these issues on the forefront has been important. >> i can't thank you enough. alderman french, cedric alexander, it's sad we convene on this occasion but this conversation is all important. thank you both, appreciate it.
