i'm christine romans. 30 minutes past the hour. john berman hat week off. >>> let's start with the big rally in michigan. nearly 3,000 people cheered donald trump tuesday night at his first campaign event since last tuesday's debate. the billionaire presidential candidate giving the keynote address at a republican fund-raiser in birchrun, michigan. poll numbers showing him maintain his lead in iowa followed by 17% and followed by scott walker and marco rubio and jeb bush came in seventh in this poll at 5%, behind ben carson and ted cruz and carly fiorina with 7% there. at the michigan event, trump declared he can win, despite recent controversies, even with women and hispanics. >> we are going to do very well with the hispanic vote and we are going to do great with the women vote. if you look at in nevada, they did the poll and i'm leading in the hispanic vote, because i create jobs. i will be creating tremendous numbers of jobs. i think we are going to do great. and then the women's health issues, i'm for that. i watched jeb bush

christine romans is cnn's chief business correspondent. really? >> now we have entered a new phase of the recovery. this new report from georgetown, from the expert on this, it's called good jobs are back, college graduates are first in line. they analyzed all the new jobs since 2010 and found about half of them were high-paying jobs. what am i talking about? jobs that are $53,000 a year or more. jobs that tend to have health insurance. jobs that tend to have a retirement plan, so there are good jobs out there and when they break it down, 2.9 million of them high-paying jobs. these are all the jobs out of the recovery. you can see that old narrative that so many of the jobs were low-income jobs just not holding true. that was true in the first part of the recovery, but recently we've been adding better jobs. science, technology, engineering, math, managerial roles, health care. these are the kinds of jobs we're seeing really picking up steam right now. >> that's awesome. >> it's good, and when you look at those jobs, carol, who are these jobs goin

christine romans has more on this. >> it's going to be ugly. you have apple shares lower, facebook shares lower. this is what it looks like around the world. i mean you have big losses in europe and shanghai closed down 8.5% wiping out all the gains for the year and a dramatic day for the year. that is a plunge. an ugly market. futures in the u.s., s&p down 2%. that's a big move. a 2% move is a big move. we are going to see more pain for your 401(k) today. why more pain? friday was terrible. the dow jones down 3%. it's below 17,000. it's the lowest level since last fall. these were some of the worst losses in four years for the market. commodities, a big loser, too. take a look at oil, below $40 a barrel. look at this. six year lows for oil. lower gas prices. by halloween, you are going to have $2 gas. that's the upside for consumers. it's unease for anybody with energy stocks in their 401(k). it's unsettling for country that is depend on oil for their revenue. three hours until the markets open. it's going to be another ugly open. the weekend

. >> i'm christine romans. so nice to see you. all eyes on the stock market. the dow sinking morning 1,000 points in the first ten minutes. look at the comeback. the dow climbs 800 points. then closes down almost 600. investors are selling risky assets moving into safe havens like government bonds. trading the heaviest in four years. some of the most held stocks in america were frenzied. bank of america and apple and general electric and microsoft. u.s. stock futures are up significantly right now. really important to note here that the u.s. is bouncing back. so are europe stocks. that's not the case where the selloff started in asia. i want to look at shanghai's benchmark index down 8% almost for the second day in a row. the index has crumbled 40% since june wiping out trillions in value. now fears in chinese's economy have sent stocks plunging. i want to bring in andrew stevens in hong kong. andrew, it looks as though selling frenzy has stopped in europe. u.s. indications are the dow will rise, but china still feeling a lot of pain. >> reporter: absolutely a

. >> i want to talk about with christine romans and richard quest. mark tor mark, to you first. he said yesterday's selling was foolish, it was china's stock market, not about china's economy. do you agree? >> i don't know. what's going on in china is a problem. the chinese economy is the second largest on the planet. it accounted for most of the growth over the last five years. if it's struggling, that means our symptom is going to struggle. the biggest weight on our stock market is the fact it's come so far in such a brief period since five or six years. stocks nearly rose three times. it's not at all typical. it's not surprising that you'd see a step back. that you'd see a correction. yeah, the approximate cause for all of this may be china. but ultimately this is a bit of a breather. the stock market is self-correcting. >> christine, to you. >> a 10% refresh in a bull market every 18 months or so. this stock market went four years basically going straight up. what the catalyst was were these concerns about china, but narcotic wmarket was due for a correction. sto today you'r

christine romans equated the united states market to being the dirtiest shirt in the pile of dirty laundry. it's bad but it could be much, much worse. it's friday now. what happens monday? is this one of those things where monday the market bounces back 480 points and we'll forget this will happen? i'm sensing people saying maybe the market is off its highs for a while now. >> the key thing to remember right now is august is a terrible time for any traders to go away on vacation. there was a lot of selling today, but perhaps a key issue now is really what happens next in china? if we see the chinese authorities coming out with some kind of credible plan, some indication they're in control of their economy and they want to try to bolster growth, they will help to reassure nerves. if we see europe or the greece situation improve a bit, that might reassure people. but right now it's a sense of nervousness that's taking over many investors and it's hard to see what's going to break that in these thin markets. >> so things may not pick up like they often do next week. i want to focus on the las

cnn money chief business correspondent christine romans joining me now. this is a very steep drop, left a whole lot of people very nervous. so what do you you attribute this to? >> it's a reminder that stocks do go down. three things that really bothered people this week. one, china's growth is slowing pretty dramatically and that affects the whole world. number two, oil prices crashed below $40 a barrel. that is really unsettling for investors who might have exposure to those energy stocks that are declining rapidly. and number three, the fed will raise interest rates maybe in september, maybe in december. but that will affect every single american. two charts i want to show you. first showed how ugly the week looked. 1,000 points down on the dow. here is the perspective. take a look since 2009. you can barely see last week's blip. you can barely see it. that shows you a market that has gone straight up with hardly any corrections. so it looks like now we're getting that correction. >> in other ways how might people be impacted by this, not just the inve

christine romans is the chief correspondent and i watch her every morning with john berman. >> you get up early. >> absolutely. i'm a knuckle head when it comes to this stuff. it's august and hard to get people on the phone because so many people are on vacation. >> it is vacation season. that can make the big swings worse. this has been a long overdue thing. i would say don't panic, it's long overdue and there are a lot of reasons why the stocks fell. >> what are they? >> china is slowing and there are a lot of concerns that we don't know how slow it is growing. there are a couple numbers there discouraging. and a number of markets see the chinese economic miracle of the last 20 years and the multinational company deriving money from there. oil crashed below $40 a barrel. great for consumers in this country will see $2 gas by fall. i think you will see $2 gas by >> $2? >> i think you'll pay $2 gas by halloween in many parts of the country. you'll have interest rates that are going to rise soon. we don't know when but the interest rates will rise. all those things together really gelle

i'm joined by christine romans. christin christina, i want to start with you. what's the mood there? >> looks like a continuation from yesterday. lots of downward pressure. gonna be ugly. carol, let me put some more context around this. yesterday that 2% drop was the biggest we've seen in about a year and a half. we're now below that 17,000 threshold. that psychological threshold that we haven't reached in about a year. clearly a lot of concerns here, mainly driven by the fact that emerging markets are really in disarray and that's causing oil to drop. that's putting pressure on the dollar upwards, actually, that could spell some trouble for u.s. businesses trying to sell their goods overseas. so there is where the concern lies for a lot of investors. we'll have to see how this plays out. it's kind of too early to tell. remember, keep in mind, we are still pretty high on a historical basis. we're still pretty close to record highs. >> okay. so i see christine is nodding. monica is nodding. thank you by the way. christine, is the correction finally here? >> ther

christine romans is here to tell us. >> this is unexpected, yesterday china lowering the value of its currency. it helps its own economy to the detriment of american exports. when china makes a big move like this, the biggest move in 20 years or something, it shakes everyone. around the world stock markets are reeling. commodity markets are reeling. you're seeing a flood of money out of the commodities and stocks into the bond market, for example. interest rates are moving as well. let me show you what it's going to mean to you right now, this very moment. it means refinance your mortgage. these are very, very low interest rates. number two, gas prices are falling. we have oil prices at the lowest since 2009 in part because of the china move. it was already moving lower. i think you're going to see $2 gas by back to school. market volatility, what does that mean? it means your 401(k) is getting hit. your retirement savings is worthle worthless today than it was even a few years ago. there are ways that this move by china will affect all of us right now. it's also very political. we ar
