>> in florida they had a felon voter purge. basically, the state sent a huge list of people they said were felons who are on the voting rolls and told the county supervisors in florida to purge them in advance of the 2000 election. it turned out that list was littered with errors and disproportionately african-american. african-americans were 11% of florida's electorate but 44% of those who were wrongly labeled felons. what happened was, thousands of people showed up on election day , were told it were felons -- wrongly -- and were not able to vote. after the election, the state ran the numbers again and found that 12,000 people were wrongly labeled as felons and potentially purged from the rolls. that was 500 -- 22 times bush's 577 vote margin of victory. this purge could have very will decide the florida election. it was significant for a few reasons. number one, led to a new wave of disenfranchisement efforts. republicans realized this voter purge could swing most elections. the second thing, the bush and administration and

this would normally be the time florida will get tropical storm watches. they don't know if the storm will survive the night. and this statement, a strong likelihood, erika will be degenerating into a tropical wave. it's just to the west of port prince here, and going to be departing haiti, and heading toward the eastern edge of cuba. still technically a tropical storm, but interacting with wind could continue to weaken. if it doesn't, it has to interact with cuba, and then forecasted to become a tom there's an opportunity for strengthening off the west coast of florida, and by the way, look at this, fort lauderdale, boca raton, down in miami, not even in the cone anymore, and this could very well just be an area of low pressure, and could turn out to be a good thing with beneficial rains later in the weekend in the first part of next week. one to three inches of rain. this storm weakening fast and running into a lot of obstacles over the next 24 to 36 hours. more on erika and our 7-day forecast that i know you'll love coming back in accuweather in a few m

and in terms of florida, most of the models,f in general, bring it right along the east coast of florida. right now, it's not set to make a landfall. that could change with the next run when the hurricane hunters go in and see what's happening with the storm. this could all change again. but for now, florida is still has to be on alert for the possibility of a landfall. with this hurricane. and then, possibly sliding up the coast towards the carolinas, as well. what is that going to mean for us? well, for right now, it's still very, very uncertain around here. the storm right at this time is going to be remaining off the coast of florida early into next week. but it could possibly, some of direction. we're still in a drought situation in many areas, especially long island is under a mod ate drought level and could use some rain. nobody wants floods or anybody to get hurt, but the rain certainly would help out with our drought situation. early, though. today, lovely. in the low to mid-80s. up to 49 days so far. that streak of 80 plus days continue for the tri-state. more tomorrow into the

south florida needs the rain, john, drought in portions of central and north florida do not. tampa has seen more than enough rain and the risk of flooding will come along with the storm. >> as of now, or as of the last update from the weather center, doesn't look like it'll florida as a hurricane, but are there scenarios where it stays out over the water for a long enough period of time to strengthen and regain? >> that's a good point. this is expected to stay a tropical storm as it comes on the north side of hispaniola, cause a lot of rain as you're seeing there, but if it takes more of an easterly track, here we go, takes more of an easterly track and pushes over the warm waters of bahamas, that is going to cause it to possibly strengthen, then you would have most of the rain would be offshore. then you would have more impact than south carolina, if it goes measure of a westerly route, it could strengthen over mexico then more rain on the west side of florida. the spine of florida, the west side of florida more the likely scenarios at this point, but we're going to watch it
