in iowa. in 2007, we had 19 candidates for president come through the rounds duringirg the 11 days. sometimes we had more than one candidate here at a time. the one i probably remember the most is our current president, barack obama. he and his wife and his children were all here that day, and the one thing his kids wanted to do ride the midway. so, i was able to get them and take them into the midway, with a little help from our security, put them on a couple of the rides, and they just had a great time. and kind of as a family, i think they felt like this is a little relief to the campaign trail for the kids. it was probably not so much fun. they got to come to be fair and ride some rides at the midway. not so much politics, but to me, that was a very memorable occasion. and the iowa state fair, i feel like, has been a good partner with our new users -- our newspaper here in town called "the des mnes register." they have a spot in ground they leased from the iowa state fair during the fair.

white house. >> the first iowa state fair was held in fairfield, iowa in 1854, some 150 years ago now. it started very small, in southeast iowa. frome fair progressed fairfield, iowa, i think it went to eight cities over the course ina number of years, and 1879, it came to des moines. that point, a few years later, the legislators set aside money to purchase the site that we are on today, a site of 266 acres that was bought from the thorton family. at that time, the first pavilion was built in pioneer hall, next-door door to the building we are in today. , we started building buildings and erecting barnes , but alongnd sheep with that came the need for commercial exhibits, and also the need for campgrounds, for people to stay. when you have all of that together, pretty soon, a little entertainment breaks out, and i think the light will probably went off over the top of the head and they said, this could be a really fantastic celebration of everything, if we would just incorporate. through the years, and really probably from the 1950's to today, the entertainment aspect was really adde

iowa, we had 600 people. anyone know the population of boone, iowa? that is a good part of the population. mark: they have not heard your imitation. john: did you see how hot bernie sanders was there? he was really hot. he was not the only one at this fair taking heat. we're going to show you that when we come back. ♪ john: the state fair has been so hot over this weekend. how hot was it? herman hammond sweated it out and track the candidates. herman: a presidential candidate in picturesque iowa. everything is beautiful in the iowa state fair, even you, 1100-pound pig. it is a great spot for a photo op for grand entrance. but then the hot sun comes out, the crush of people, and you wonder, can this really be an ideal place for voters to meet the presidential candidate? can you even find hillary clinton in this shot? as she traveled through the agriculture building, i clocked clinton at 0.12 miles per hour. that is literally slower than a sloth. and this crowd is not always iowa nice. >> you are going to wind up in jail if you do that again. step bac

john, major week in iowa. no straw poll this year, but the fair has drawn almost everybody to this state. tell me one thing you are looking forward to during this weekend in iowa. john: the fact that there is no straw poll makes the fair even bigger. on the republican side, i am looking forward to seeing scott walker. he is now, according to cnn, third place in iowa after being in first place all year long. he is taking a beating at the hands of donald trump and ben carson. this state is a must win for him. him coming in here trying to pick up ground and reconnect, i want to see how well he does. mark: i think walker does have a big challenge, because he was too low-key at the debate. breaking through at the fair is hard to do. the thing i am looking for that relates to that is trump. mr. trump is going to the fair tomorrow. john: do you think you will break through? mark: he will break through. he is bringing his helicopter. still questions about whether people will get free rides, but trump dominates no matt

let's go to iowa now. bernie sanders, setting record crowds out there in iowa. this guy is burning it up. got the great hair cut, you know, people are coming to see this guy speak. does he have a shot there or not? >> i think bernie sanders is doing what he needs to do. he's spending time in iowa, he spent more time in iowa as of august than hillary clinton. he's getting to know people on the ground but these huge crowds, you know, i don't necessarily know that he's translating all of that huge curiosity into caucus goers. hillary clinton has the biggest ground game in iowa right now. so i think that bernie sanders challenge going forward in iowa is to take that real big curiosity and interest and energy that he has seen in the crowds and translate that into votes on caucus night. >> it's going to take money and organization. james, i was just in new hampshire doing a little "waters world" and i have to tell you there are a lot of them up there in new hampshire. they're fired up. they're not always co herent but there is some excitement up there. what do you thi

the iowa state fair. republican and democratic hopefuls are descending on the event over the next week, hoping to shore up support in this critical early stage. and this a very important state. jeb bush among the headliners friday. hitting the famous soapbox, a tradition where candidates get 20 minutes to speak directly to the crowds there sponsored by the "des moines iowa register." but the front-runners, donald trump and hillary clinton, will skip that rite of passage when they visit the fair today. cnn covering all of this action for you. sara marie, hillary clinton as far as we understand while she's made her appearances and malede joke about the e-mail controversy last night at the wing ding event, donald trump is firing back. what is -- what has he been saying about what she said? >> reporter: yeah, well, let's start off with hillary clinton. she's about to arrive here. in roughly an hour. look, at her big event last night she did make light of this e-mail. let's take a look at what she had to say.

walker, the guy who lost the most in iowa, bush was never huge in iowa. walker was. when you ask candidates about immigration, christie says bring in the fedex people. when donald trump talks of building a wall against the southern border, walker says what about the northern border. >> they raise concerns including law enforcement folks that brought it up. it is a legitimate issue to look at. >> i mean trump is going to build a wall, i'm going to build two. it's trying to one-up trump. itis a longer border. take it how it sounds. it's silly. fiscally, that is a tough call. this shows that, again, walker's grass root policy is not it. >> it shows the trump effect on this whole thing. it's 5,500 miles to build that border. trump's rhetoric hardened the discussion. you have to propose stuff like that to get attention. >> going to build two walls. i got it. move on to the democrats. a fascinating race there. we have seen the polling that sanders is in the lead or competitive in new hampshire. hillary clinton had iowa. she's been leading. look at this one, she's leading.

when you're in iowa. because all of the candidates, at least nearly all of them, will be there with the stump speeches and they're going to be, of course, enjoying some fried foods. expected to attend, more than a million people. the big event marks a defining moment in this multimillion dollar battle for the first in the nation caucus state, but just how important is it for a candidate to win the hearts of iowans? look at this, bill clinton in '92, george h.w. bush in 1988, and ronald reagan, they won their party's nomination and eventually the election but a win in the hawkeye state can also make or break a candidate. in 2008 barack obama's victory helped propel the then senator to the white house. there are many who said if he lost iowa it would have ended there. larry sabato is the director for the center of politics at the university of virginia. larry, i guess, is it overhyped in some way, or is it really a must-win now? >> well, victor, iowa has one great virtue that no other state has, it's first.

and all eyes on iowa. my minute now hillary clinton is set to begin a town hall in debuick ahead of her trip to the iowa state fair tomorrow. that coming as the democratic front runner faces more scrutiny over her e-mails two. e-mails on her server deemed top secret, including discussions of a u.s. drone operation. at the fair clinton will be avoiding the famous soap box and its wide open opportunity for hecklers. but jeb bush braved it today facing some tough questions, including why he's using many of the same advisors as his brother and father. >> and if they have any executive experience they have had to deal with two republican administrations. who are the people that were presidents the last two republican -- i mean this is kind of a tough game for me to be playing to be honest with you. >> if it's tough for bush to convince people he's a stranger to the political game, donald trump hasn't had niz of those problems. he'll touch down in des moines on his own private helicopter at the fair tomorrow. jo

iowa electricity comes from clean iowa wind. [applause] that is in a short period of time. the great thing about those big plays is they are to big -- they are too big to import from china so we make them right here. the governor of hawaii just set a goal of moving hawaii to a 100% clean electric grid. the governor of california has set a goal of moving to a 50% clean electric grid. it will require new technology and submit generation nuclear, it will require new battery technology and probably some we have never heard of. in the meantime, with wind, with solar, with designing smarter buildings, that zero homes that produce more energy than they use, we can move to a 100% clean electric grid and just in the nick of time. some of the things we do like the renewable portfolio standards have to constantly go up and not down. that is true of the renewable fuel standard as well. when he to go up so we developed a the next generation that can make our economy go. >> we want to thank you for the work you did in 2014 in iowa. the democr
