and that is why i'm so thankful to michael brown and his family. right now there is a celebration among mothers who have lost their children. and we were thinking about what has happened in the last year and one thing is for sure: america is now awake. >> what's changed since last year? >> well, it depends on who you ask. if you look at the ground, there is so many people who are actively engaged, whether they are recalling the mayor or they're organizing on the streets. or they're going to the st. louis county board of elections to collect names. those are some of the things that you cannot legislate and i'm really happy to see that activism that did not exist before. but there are other concerns that we have. for example, while we pass the municipal court reform bill, it does not answer the question of why did michael brown die? where are there men and women who are killed and targeted every single day. so we still have a very long way to go but we have to create a space so people can find resolve among the different groups of people. >> did this

what do you think is different about ferguson today, a year after michael brown died? >> well, there's a lot that is different. and it depends on who you are speaking to, if they think it's positive or negative, many of the changes that are taking place. i think that we still are not at a place where there's the 2-way dialogue, like emily talked about. it doesn't seem to happen. we have people who are tone deaf. you have some of those who are yelling. what is different, there are more people trying to get engaged in their community, to make a difference, and that is important. so beyond the yelling and the people who are trying to ignore others, there are more involved from ferguson, trying to make a difference. >> what has not changed in ferguson, what is notable to you? >> it seems like ferguson is stuck in limbo. we have an interim city manager, an interim police chief - i said interim. there's not a lot of closure so far, or commitment, a step to move forward. ferguson is still in negotiations with the department of justice, and they rejected the first offer that w

you look at the optics of the early, fiery days of the protest after michael brown was killed. it seemed like the whole community is up in flames. that was simply never the case. we're talking about four or five blocks. unfortunately, this stretch of four or five blocks is always the scene of violence associated with this ordeal that we've been going through for over a year. this same stretch that's been ground zero from the very beginning continues to be ground zero, not only for the protest movement pushing for change in this community and this country, but also time and again of violence. >> and i want you to quickly, as we wrap up here, look around and tell me what you see there on the ground, because it is important to know that despite the fact that shots have been fired tonight, several of them, we understand one person is injured. we don't know the extent of that or the details behind that. but are you seeing crowds continue to gather or disperse? what is the scene like? >> from my vantage point, i'm maybe a quarter mile back. the police have long ago blocked access to
