n side of croatia's border with slovenia. i have spoken to refugees from syria just a few moments ago, they said they came here by taxi, that they tried to get into slovenia and were turned away. as you can see behind me, this area is rather empty. the official border crossing is just down that road over there. it is not too crowded right now, but the border beyond that is rather porous, we have seen just down that road, several taxis dropping refugees off. obviously they are going to try to cross. the question is going to be if they can't get through the official crossing, will they try to cross the field. it's literally an open field. you see one tree on each side, so are they going to try to cross by foot? that's the biggest question now. we are seeing enforced security measures on both sides. there is a helicopter hovering above on the slovenia side. they are trying to make sure people aren't coming into slovenia. it's a dire situation for the refugees. many thought they would be in slovenia already. that hasn't happened

lawrence lee, al jazeera with the refugees on the serbia/croatia border. >> reporter: refugees in croatia is starting to take a toll and these are the latest pictures on the border with serbia and refugees waiting hours to board a train to continue their journey towards the eu and people pushed and shoved to board the train and climbing through windows to make sure they could get a spot and the government said it will close the crossing if another 8,000 people enter in one day. well after syrians afghans are the largest group among those seeking sanctuary in counties and europe, more than 40,000 refugees from afghanistan applied for asylum in the eu last year second to syrians and globally more than 2.6 afghan refugees are living in exile outside the country. and afghanistan's refugee crisis is the world's most protracted, it has been going on since 1979 when the soviet invasion started four decades of civil war. well a little earlier i spoke with the u.n. special representative for afghanistan nicholas and began by asking him what is behind the latest exodus from the country. >> clearly

live to the croatia-sloughinian border. lawrence lee is there. people are effectively stranded at the crossing. yes. this is one of the a number of different places that you described, where countries are dumping groups in different places. all these people were brought here more or less from zagreb in buses and are in sort of a no man's land. that's the border with slovenia. it's a no man's land. within a couple of thousands, this is what the local volunteers are saying. they are giving them soup, bedding and clothes. the temperatures are a little colder. it's relative and obviously unpleasant. it could be worse. the biggest sticking point is over there, where the buildings are, there's a lot of people piled up against the fence with riot police, pleading to let them go through. they have small children. one or two were let through and they said "why can't you let us through?", there was an arabic speaker. a couple of buses took them up the road. they started to take a few more people. you could have forecast that they would have to deal with it

we join the serbian town near the border with croatia. tell us what has been happening at that border town? >> we saw 500 of them coming here by organized transportation, buses that were provided by serbian governments or the red cross. they were carried from the border crossing between serbia and hungary to here. also they were coming here with the border crossing with macedonia in south serbia. they come here greeted by volunteers who give them food, give them water, and they go on through this road. they turn left and go to alternative roots. the police greeted them. they put them in buses. and then take them to croatian refugee camps we had confirmation that a train will carry 500 refugees from here to the capital of croatia. as we've seen today, the scenes that we saw a few hundred people coming here. there was a decision by red cross, by serbian government that all buss with refugees that are entering serbia will be carried here and then to croatia. >> some of the people arriving have been in organized buses, organized by organizati
