francis buys into that. he wants to go seek god in the poor and the marginalized and also in the way that the world work politically and economically. he doesn't dre a contrast. >> i want to generalize you, and keep me honest here. isn't the jesuit order considered more liberal in the catholic church? >> absolutely. so francis in that way is a traditional jesuit, but they're liberal not because of a ideological thing but because of a they're yo logical commitment that the world is good and not an evil place. it's a place to do good work and show the mercy of god and love of god to the world. so often we talk about the pope as a political figure, and for sure he has political opinions. he's a priest. >> these are the washington, d.c. children that brought gifts and flowers to the pope. this pope has an incredible connection with children. it's been a big part of some of the important things he's had to say, right? >> absolutely. one of things we need to watch for carefully on this trip is the extent to which

you always see him nestled very closely to pope francis, whether it's between pope francis and president obama. he has the difficult job of translating not just the words but the expression, the emotion and also not being obtrusive and stepping back and not interfering with the contact pope francis has but relaying the words for those who don't speak his language. >> and so fast with it, alternating what he knows are prepared remarks and the times when pope francis decides to be spontaneous. >> which we've seen quite a bit of. >> yes. >> we get the transcripts. we have them in advance. we no what pope francis is scheduled to say and more often than not he does stray from that and becomes very animated when he does. and it's beautiful to see when that passion arises in him when he's speaking off the cuff. >> we just saw another passionate moment where someone obviously asked him to bless them. he really paused, closed his eyes and again entered into that moment of human connection. also with monsignor miles, when the pope smiles, he smiles. he delivers the message with a smile as well. >>

let's get more on francis' visit. for that, we go live to washington. >> abc's karen travers is on capitol hill. good morning, karen. the white house has hosted many world leaders. give us a sense of how this morning's event might be different. >> reporter: this feels bigger and better for americans than some of the world leader events, phillip. this is going to be 15,000 people later this morning on the south lawn at the white house. you could get tickets. you could get them through the white house. and it's going to be a wide range of people. and i think if you look at this, compared to a world leader coming, it's more personal for americans. 22% of americans identify themselves as catholic. that's nearly 70 million people. so, there's that connection to pope francis that, perhaps, you don't see when a world leader comes, no matter how big the events are. back in 2007, queen elizabeth of england came to the white house. and i was there for that. and that felt immense. i went back and looked at the numbers. that was

you talk about the popularity of pope francis, a pom says that 63% of american catholics approve of francis. beyond that, 41% of ordinary americans, who don't necessarily identify as clicks. have we seen that before? >> absolutely, stephanie, people all across the religious spectrum find something new and appealing in this pope. the numbers among catholics, i think may be a little low. previous polls were 70, possibly the high 70's. what may be happening is that people grasp a little bit more of the pope's full message, the full agenda. they're finding that he doesn't fit neatly into any of our american political categories. this is not a pope of the democratic party anymore than the republican party. because of that during his visit to the u.s., he's going to challenge everybody to think a little bit more about what his message is and how that relates to the important things now in american public life. >> people keep saying it's a pastoral visit and not political. >> pope francis believes that the message he teaches of god's love, mercy and justice requires human societies and human being
