we continue our coverage now of the breaking news out of hicksville where a train derailment is causing problems for commuters on the long island railroad. >> it's slow going for trains coming in, some people "home" at west. however, there is no way for you to get back to the city. >> five hours after this freight train derailed, and the situation is pretty much the same here in hicksville, two freight cars remain off the tracks. you can see one of them behind me. mta crews have brought in payloaders and trains to try to get those trains back on the tracks, but right now they remain as they were around 1:00 this afternoon, and the delays continue as well. two llbi cars were the hardest hit. 45 eastbound trains systemwide have been canceled tonight and there is no westbound service between jamaica and la concha and port jefferson. it's unclear why the two cars of ed the tracks early this afternoon, but no one was hurt. the priority right now, getting e train cars back on the tracks, but it's unclear how long that will take. that leaves only one of two tracks in operation here in hicksvil

this happened just west of the hicksville station. the emergency repairs, that's impacting the commuter. we have team coverage. lauren has the latest from long island railroad. we want to start with katherine creag out in hicksville. >> reporter: yes, at the liir station. there's an announcement happening right now talking about that freight train, that it's off the tracks, but that commuters should expect delays and maybe cancellations. for example, the 443 train was eight minutes late. commuters told us that it is almost always on time. they actually expect delays to worsen as the morning progresses. that freight train has been removed. workers were on the job overnight. they got it off the tracks. there were two train cars that actually derailed yesterday afternoon. 200 feet of tracks now have to behe repaired. those tracks have to be inspected. the repairs have to begin. overnight, workers removed it. so that's good news, but there are delays, and there might be cancellations according to the mta. the derailment happened at 1:00 i

though are the westbound lanes terminate in hicksville. there is bus service that is moving commuters between those two stations. they put that plan into place at 10:30. it will be in place all afternoon. the reason is that they want the rail workers to be able to work without having to worry about trains rolling through the derailment zone. officials admit it's a big job. >> if we can't get there, we have to turn around and start over somewhere else. >> the track guys have been out there for many hours. i was told it was in excess of 1,000 feet of track damaged, significantly damaged, third rail, regular rail, ties, all of that. >> reporter: back to a live picture. 1,000 feet of track. that has to be repaired. i'm told that two switches have to be replaced. all of that, the railroad is hoping to have done by 4:00, 5:00 tonight roughly. if that is not done, i'm told they will revert to the plan that they had in effect for the morning rush hour and they will reopen the main line one track at least to get trains out of new york city to point
