that's according to officials in the town of hilldale, utah. the floods hit a polygamist community which warren jeffs ran. he's behind bars for sexually assaulting girls behind what many called a cult. you can see rescuers pulling people from muddy waters. a wall of water and debris swept an suv and a van downstream yesterday. all of the victims women and young children that. official went on to say the community was caught off guard and probably unaware of the flash flood warnings. keep in mind, members of that sect, if you will, are typically not allowed to watch television or go online. our chief correspondent jonathan hunt is live in our west coast news hub this afternoon. what's the latest on the search for the missing women and children? >> shep, it is ongoing and it is increasingly desperate. one adult and three children are still missing. 100 law enforcement personnel are involved in the search. the governor of utah is sending in national guardmen to help. because of the delicate nature of this, searching through piles of debris for chi

this is hilldale utah. this in the mountains just to the north and just to the east. and this canyon here is called water canyon. that is very prone to flash flooding. everything that falls in these mountains can quickly rush down and go right through hilldale into colorado city. in the trajectory, the path this took, it was the worst case scenario. it went to the south and they said it on rained 20 to 30 minutes in the city and it went right up the canyon into the mountains and all of that water collects and funnels down and rushes down. that's what they dealt with. 4:00, 5:00 in the afternoon when the roads are the most crowded. it's a small city, around 3,000 people. it's a horrible tragedy. that's like a once in a 100-year event for that area. we do have heavy rain in los angeles. this is good. cooler in the west, chances for showers, even areas near that valley fire had rain yesterday that was much needed. this is great news for firefighters to try to get a grip on was is a very busy fire season. i had our staff put together a bunch of numbers because we're headi

you can see hilldale right here, and we had thunderstorms pushing through. we put this into motion, and we had several rounds of thunderstorms going through that particular area. but like i told tony, it's a combination of the geography across southern parts of utah where any rain gets funneled into a very small area, and of course 2 inches can go to 5 feet of floodwater in a very short time across many of these particular valleys. they are now dry, and we're talking about rain to the north as well as to the west. and we're looking at rain over parts of the fire area, over the valley fire, and that has been helping, and also bringing that relative humidity up across the region. unfortunately, over the next couple of days, the temperature across that area is going to be going up. as you can see from thursday to friday, we're looking at a rise in temperature across the region. and across the valley fire, though we're 30% contained right now, we're going to be watching that area very carefully, tony, because the temperatures are going back into the high 90s. >>

nbc's leeann greg is in hilldale, utah, with a closer look at just how damaging these floods were. >> reporter: yes, good evening. the search for that remaining person will continue tonight. you can see what is left of that flash flood yesterday that was caused from torrential rains. a flash flood warning was in effect, but no one expected that 2 1/2 inches of rain within two hours that fell on already saturated soil and swollen rivers. it was described as a raging wall of water that consumed these two vehicles, a van and an suv, carrying 16 people, reportedly three women and the rest were children. you mentioned 12 confirmed dead. three were rescued, and that one person is still being -- they're trying to find him. trying to find the remaining person. so a horrific scene here. the rescue crews have been out ever since this happened. the heavy equipment. hundreds of volunteers have been looking through the debris trying to find any signs of survivors. so a very grim task that they've been working on the last 24 hours. >> all right, leanne gregg, thanks. >>> thousands of people on the

hilldale, utah, is one of the towns where the flooding struck. leanne gregg has an update from just over the border in colorado city, arizona. >> reporter: good afternoon, the search is continuing today for four people who went missing from two different locations. part of that search will focus downstream from here to the north of this community. two vehicles went into the water carrying 16 people. nine children and three women were killed. and one child remains missing and is presumed to be dead. to the north of here in zion national park, four different people were also killed and three members of their party remain missing, the national guard will join in that search today, about 600 people from law enforcement and volunteers have been out since monday looking for the missing and today once again for the third day in a row thunderstorms are in the forecast and the governor along with other officials are urging visitors to be mindful of the forecast and the possibility of more flooding. i'm leanne gregg reporting from colorado city, arizona. >
