looking at the benjamin franklin parkway quiet now you're seeing the view from logan square in just a few hours, it will be full for up to a million pilgrims, many traveled to america and across the world just to be part of the historic event in our own backyard. pope francis is celebrating mass this afternoon it is a once in a lifetime event for everyone who comes out. katherine scott joins us live on the park, katherine has anyone showed up for the mass. >> absolutely people have been showing up early. some people never left they camped out overnight because they wanted to make sure they had a great spot for this afternoon's papal mass. you can see some of the people set up in their chairs with their blanks next to the parkway. we are quite a bit away from the art museum. but he can see where the alter is for the this afternoon's mass. it is empty now, but up a million people are expected today. if the stage is too far away you can watch the mass on the jumbotron that is positioned around the parkway. this has been such a meaningful weekend to sue many people. when the pope came dow

so in about three hours pope francis will be driven around logan circle to greet the pilgrims. then he'll deliver sunday mass. we've been watching everyone arriving in droves for this historic event. moments ago we heard a volunteer attempting to redirect those with tickets to a metal detector. when you got here you found this line. did you want to turn around? >> no. we're so excited to see our holy father. >> reporter: how long did you wait in line? >> just a little bit over an hour. everybody was friendly. it's not like getting into the stadium. everyone is happy. it was great. >> reporter: everything was fine. >> it looks like we lost that picture there from monique braxton's camera. that often happens. here's a picture sent to us of the lines waiting to get into the parkway. that is simply amazing. >> this is a good sign. the weather is good. the sun is not a factor. it won't be beating down making that concrete harder. there's a bit of a breeze. it's a comfortable day to do this. those folks are all there because they want to be. the weather conditions are very, very plea

the performances will continue throughout the afternoon at that logan square stage. exhibits will line the parkway this afternoon inside the francis festival grounds, which is where we are. the big event tonight is happening on the main stage behind me. that's where mark wahlberg was chosen to emcee. he'll be joined by large performances, aretha franklin, big names here, andre bocelli, philadelphia orchestra will be performing. at 6:45, this is the time that everyone who is lining up outside of here is expecting. that is when the pope will take part in the motorcade, here along the parkway near where we are located in the media riser, it will continue to city hall, around city hall and back here where the pope will then walk on the stage, be introduced to the tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, really, people expected, by archbishop charles chaput, the archbishop will welcome the pope. we'll enjoy part of the ceremony, part of the performances. around 8:30, he will give his final closing remarks to all the people who have come out. then he'll depart, going back
