people fear joseph mccarthy. if you took him on in the senate, you could often end up without a job. it he had power. he had subpoena power. he had all kinds of power. the longer he went, he took on general george marshall, the hero of world war ii, and he just went after marshall, and they thought surely he would come out and take him on, but he didn't. that was not eisenhower's way. but when he took on marshall, that was pretty bad. and then he went after the army and communists in the army. and he did not take on the army so easily. the army had a lawyer, mr. welsh. >> senator mccarthy, i don't know anything about the application he filled out. mr. dinkins -- you don't know anything about that? senator mccarthy -- i never saw it. senator, i have the application that he filled out, and i can show you -- >> don't tell me i notarized it? >> what? >> don't tell me i notarized it. >> no, you merely signed it. you know, look, mccarthy seems like he's on the track. the thing that he's got going for him is the fact that conservatives don't have a consensus candidate that they could really put out there that could pull enough votes to do it. you've got to remember, scalise, they don't trust scalise either. to a lot of folks steve scalise seems very conservative but to the most conservative members of the house they kind of think he's a little bit of a squish. this is the dynamic that kevin mccarthy is sort of wading into here. and that helps him in a lot of ways to at least get this position for the next, you know, maybe six months or year at a minimum because there's nobody out there that the conservatives can agree to that they think -- that they can force enough of the sort of rank-and-file republicans to vote for at this point. >> it seems to me like they don't have -- the hardliners don't have enough votes, as you say, to elect anybody. even if they could come to a consensus around who they liked. but they seem to have enough votes to potenti

mccarthy has never been on the stage. one of the least experienced ever, assuming he becomes speaker. for gowdy, he had four months been carefully preparing the hearings, trying to do what no republican has done for a long time, run on a politically substantive hearing. almost nothing he can do now. democrats will just say this hearing is all political. john: you had set for a while you thought that he could pull that off. gowdy took it out of his hands by mccarthy. such a long shadow cast across. hillary clinton is going to say the things she said on tv over and over again. there was almost nothing that could break the momentum of this e-mail story, at least until she got to the hearings. now she is on offense, they are on defense. this is a disaster, a disaster for congressional republicans. and for congressional republican candidates that want to see clinton on her heels. mark: mccarthy was not in a hostile place, he was on fox. the other things democrats are going to turn to is not just a saying her hearings are parti
