a few blocks the popemobile will be brought out and he will parade in the popemobile to st. patrick's cathedral. the man behind him is the same secret service agent with him he was lifting that young girl up and brought her to the pope. >> a wave from the pope. he is in the helicopter now. once he gets to the wall street, he will go down fdr, i'm sure it will be closed off. we talked a little bit about the traffic nightmare. not just this visit but all the dignitaries from the united nations. i have been told tomorrow there will be 10.3 miles of roadway in this city literally shut down. 80 blocks of street closures. i can't remember a time in this city when we had that many streets closed off. >> that is at 1:00 the height of the shut down of the city. the city is shut down in so undertaken. cost about 6 million when pope benedict was here. we have no idea how much this visit -- >> he was here three days. this is a shorter visit. >> less than 40 hours, 39 hours and 47 minutes between right now and when he leaves wheels up from this airport at j.f.k. saturday morning at 8:00

and i don't think that we saw him so much at night in the popemobile in washington at all. this will be an interesting look as we see new york city start to be lit up. the sun is setting and we're in that concrete canyon here they call midtown manhattan. >> jim, what's the sign of the crowd? >> reporter: this is the busiest part of manhattan. >> reporter: we have truly thousands here, but when he makes his way, doreen, right up to st. patrick's cathedral they have risers with only 500 invited guests and they'll be welcoming him at the steps as will mayor de blasio and governor cuomo. that's where it really gets tight and the security is very tough to cross any street around there and we're at 30 rock looking down at st. patricks. is this a short trip and is this an opportunity for the public to see him or do you have to be an invited guest with an invitation. >> in this early area yes, but he's only going to be going a few blocks before he makes it to st. patrick. this is not a long stretch right here and some people have managed to get in there and we talked to some people

as you know, the pope will be traveling in this specially built popemobile. it's a special jeep wrangler. it was manufactured by local dealers and manufacturers right here in the washington area. and it's more open because, as you know, the pope wants to get close to the people. he doesn't want to feel like he's in a can of sardines. so he wanted it as open as possible. but, of course, the secret service want it as closed as possible. so what you will see is you will see this jeep wrangler outfitted with a special hood on it. and you know, it goes like this. and the glass appears very thick to me, but the sides are completely open. so the pope can reach out and maybe touch people. but again, as you can see, people are mostly being kept behind barriers so they can't run out into the streets to greet the pope because police and the secret service want to keep people away. the pope wants to get close, but everybody is hoping, as you might expect, anderson, that the pope will stop exactly where you are. and he'll get out, and he'll come and touch a few people. th

at one point, the popemobile stops. a member of the security detail walks over to the crowd and picks up a baby boy, carrying him to pope francis. a kiss on the head. then, this little girl in her red dress, 5-year-old sophia cruz from los angeles, somehow making her way through the barricade. police moving her away. they stop her a second time. but pope francis gestures for her. the guards carry her up. a kiss. and she hands him a letter. in the letter she writes, "my heart is sad because of discrimination. my friends and i love each other no matter the color of our skin." later, greeted at the cathedral of st. matthew the apostle. walking down the aisle for a prayer service with his bishops. then, a moment of humor. >> our holy father has asked me to say that he's just very sorry he can't greet every single bishop personally. but -- >> reporter: this afternoon, we were with the thousands, awaiting the pope at the basilica. what is it? >> i don't know, just when he smiles, you just feel like he's touching your heart. >

the first sight of the pope riding into the basilica on the popemobile, the crowd went running. everyone excited and anxious to not only get a glimpse of the pope but to take a picture. but not only did the pope ride past the crowd of 25,000 people, he decided he would turn around and come back for a second time. we spoke earlier with some of the folks in the crowd. they had a few things to share about the pontiff. >> he welcomes everybody. it doesn't matter what you've done in your past or where you are in your present. he wants you to come back to the church. >> his biggest message is to care for other people. and that gives anyone hope. if he can get that message across, it will make a big difference in the world. >> i'm elated. i've been waiting for something like this for a long time. >> reporter: now, whether or not they were able to capture that perfect picture as the popemobile drove by, many folks say they will be framing their ticket. and of course they have an opportunity to snap a bunch of pictures here, especially on the jumbotron, where you could clearly see pope f

he got in that popemobile and quickly the crowd erupted. describe what it was like. >> reporter: when he went past us here, he was still in the fiat. to be honest, i think a lot of people probably missed the pope. they stood out here a couple of hours trying to get the best position. lisa smith is a native new yorker. this would have been her third pope she will have seen in person. did you actually get to see him? >> no. i was using my phone trying to take a picture and waiting for the popemobile. then all of a sudden the lady next to me said he passed. >> reporter: so it was a very quick trip, i got about two seconds. what inspired but this pope in particular? >> pope francis has a very beautiful message how we can all come together to save the environment. our environment has degraded greatly in the last 30 or 20 years. >> reporter: that clearly is an important issue to him. the closest we got up here was about 25 feet. there are some people further down south toward st. patrick's cathedral who got closer. take a look at this young lady.

when the pope came down the parkway in the popemobile, people roared. you could see a wave of flashes from cameras. people had been waiting for hours. some had seen him briefly when he walked into the basilica, but they stuck around all day long to see him come by in the popemobile. he was passing in a matter of moments, but it was these moments people were waiting for. >> i'm very emotional because it's like i pray to god, i am very happy very emotional in my hair and my mind, i love you. >> a lot of emotion last night after being here in the presence of pope francis and many will be back again today for when the pope celebrates mass along the parkway. from all the way down here, you might not see him in person, but, again, the faithful can watch on the jumbotrons and pray with thousands and thousands of a people up to a million that could be here today for the papal mass. live along the parkway, katherine scott channel 6 "action news." >> it's going to be something to see. while the pope's arrival brought a lot of people into philadelphia that has not

at 11:00, the pope hopes in his popemobile for a short parade and tens of thousands hoping to catch a glimpse. a half hour later, the pope will lead u.s. prayer with bishops at cathedral and head to the shrine, the largest roman catholic church in north america. the pope will deliver mass before a crowd of as many as 30,000, and elevate a franciscan mosque, the firs on u.s. soil. the papal festives will continue tonight. not on the bill, the hope, himself, the 78-year-old pope will be back at the vatican embassy. >> reporter: jan, thank you so much. it is really exciting here at the white house with these tens of thousands of people. it's going to be a rare occasion that actually that the president meets with the pope in the oval office parade. now after the pope's white house visit and parade, he is going to meet with about 300 american bishops and in the afternoon francis will celebrate mass. a massive security presence will follow him at every stop and jeff pegues is outside where the pope is staying during his visit to washington. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: norah, good morni

then after that, about 11:00, the pope will hop into the popemobile and the popemobile will drive down constitution after knew and that will be the best opportunity for most of you to actually see the pope. roads will be closed. security will be tight. every time the pope moves, a throng of security and press will move with him. his day begins with a 9:00 a.m. meeting at the white house. 15,000 people are expected for the south lawn event. fences have gone up to help control the crowds. porta-potties are in place as well. there will be some public viewing areas like the sidewalks near st. matthew's, but the biggest crowds are expected to line constitution avenue for the parade. the popemobile is expected to leave the south lawn of the white house about 11:00 a.m. he'll head down 17th street, up constitution, and then up 15th street back to the white house. then the pope will head to st. matthew's for a private service. after that it's back to the vatican embassy and finally about 3:30 the pontiff heads up to the basilica and the campus of catholic university. where thousands of people

> a meeting in the oval office followed this, and then running just a little bit behind schedule, a popemobile spin around the ellipse, and you may have friends or family or coworkers or neighbors who were in this crowd, and i assure you that this is one of the biggest days of their lives. it was just a remarkable scene. true the form, the pope kissed and blessed children who local police lined the route, and sometimes attempted to keep away, but look at the screen on the right. the pope's own security detail knew all too well what to do with the children. up they went, and kissing and a blessing and back they went to find their parents in those crowds. and look at this. the little baby brought over by the pope's people. for the pope to bless, and then safely returned to the parents. and really, just an incredible scene to witness, and even if you are watching on television, imagine what it would have been like if you had been there. and now what we are watching live in washington, d.c. is the pope in front of about 300 u.s. bishops who have assembled for a mass at st. matthew's cathedral, and
