it was the last week of july in portland, oregon. high over the famous willamette river. environmental protesters were hanging out under the st. john's bridge. they had rappelled over the side of that bridge. they were hanging there like trapeze artists. and they were doing that so they could try to stop a giant icebreaker run by shell oil from leaving port and heading to the alaskan arctic to drill for oil. this wasn't the first time they'd put themselves between a shell vessel and its destination. back in april as shell moved a drilling rig across the pacific heading for its arctic drilling patch, back then greenpeace activists climbed aboard that rig in the middle of the pacific ocean to try to get shell to drop their plans. then in may swarms of kayakers in seattle protested a shell rig coming into port before it was supposed to go to alaska. in june, a month after that, they tried to block it from leaving for alaska. and in july it was that protest under the bridge that caused shell's icebreaker to stop. shell had to get an emergency court order to have those activis

[laughter] >> i wrote the book probably for the same reason that i wrote a brilliant solution. i think that americans are hobbled by a lot of myths, the birth of the country. i think that all countries have this, but i think that this is part of ours and i think that the real story is so much more interesting and so much more admirable usually that i was tempted but i realize that a lot of folks that i spoke to thought that the bill of rights was part of the orig

their aspiration at the time was to expand to portland, oregon. i somewhat persuaded them that perhaps starbucks was bigger. and they needed somebody like me. you have to understand, starbucks had three stores in 1982. the core business was selling pounds of ground and roasted coffee for home use. a year after i joined the company, i went to italy for the first time. of course, you can't walk through any major city or town in italy without running into a coffee bar. and seeing the sense of community and romance around espresso. it made me realize that starbucks perhaps was not in the right part of the coffee business. that the real business and opportunity was the integration of the beverage into creating a destination and sense of community in the store. what i experienced in italy was something that was transferable in the u.s. bring for the first time great coffee, introduce new beverages that nobody has heard of. nobody had heard of a cafe latte before. i raced home to talk to the founders about the experience i had. and they rejected it. over

we call the police, and we proceed on to emmanuel hospital in portland, oregon. the detectives at the hospital wrote down everything that i said. i was a known prostitute, feeding my drug addiction. so i really couldn't expect them to believe me, but i did move forward with filing the report. and the rape kit. >> she certainly didn't know where she had been brutalized. she didn't know what city. she didn't know the identity of the assailants. the police didn't have enough to even -- even launch a detailed investigation. and the report was filed away. and nothing else happened. >> i was working my patrol, and michaelle came up to me, and she proceeded to tell me about all the things that she had experienced in the last week. you know, i had to think about that for an awful lot, because the story was something that is hard to believe. two years later, in 1990, i was contacted by a washington county detective. and he told me about a lady, she had been kidnapped, tied up, raped, put in chains, who escaped. so it's happened again. >> before i knew what was even happen
