you are watching al jazeera america live from new york city. i'm jonathan betz. we are taking a live look at roseburg, oregon where we're expecting the sheriff to speak in a few minutes about yesterday's shooting at umpqua college. at least ten people died, seven others were hurt. the gunmen was killed in exchange of gunfire with police. we have the latest from allen schauffler in roseburg, oregon. >> reporter: roseburg is not a big place, this is a town of just a little more than 21,000 people. so it's a case where if you didn't know someone who was on campus yesterday, you probably know someone who knew someone who was on campus or had a relative on campus. this is touching a lot of people in this town. morning classes were interrupted by gunfire, the first 911 call came in shortly after 10:30. >> somebody is outside one of the doors, shooting through the door. >> reporter: reports of a shooter at umpqua community college in roseburg, oregon. >> i could tell what it was, once i heard the sound and saw the people running, i knew exactly what happened. my parents

home for original documentaries al jazeera america presents only on al jazeera america >>> the big news today, the current house majority leader kevin mccarthy took his name out of the running for speaker. that news just broke. it became as a big surprise for house republicans. they gathered to vote on the next speaker. john boehner postponed the caucus election. chaf fats of utah and webster of florida are also running for the position. let's go live to washington where michael is standing by. he's been talking to some members of the republican caucus who were in that meeting. this has been a month of surprises for republicans. first, house speaker john boehner moved up his expected departure saying that he was only going to resign from the speakership but he was going to leave the house. that was a huge shock. now this. >> reporr: and randle, these are the kind of shocks that the conservatives in the republican caucus are happy about. happy to have boehner resign and mccarthy step down. the problem they have now is going forward. they won't get a candidate from the anecdotal evidence

al jazeera america will bring you that live. our correspondent allen schauffler is en route, as we look at the police continuing their search for weapons and other items related to the killings today of at least seven people and the wounding of 20. allen schauffler. >> and randall we're hearing that there is another team of dog handlers on the way from portland, federal agents with atf who will be going to that scene as well. we're hearing reports that douglas county sheriff is confirming there was actually a shootout. the officers engaged in a shootout with the suspect, that person being described as neutralized and taken to the hospital. the shooter may be alive and getting treatment at this time. we don't know that yet. none of the hospitals have confirmed they have that suspect in custody. counselors are on hand for anybody that needs them in rosburg if people need that, that's where staff, students, faculty members have been taken after the campus was cleared and put on lockdown. randall? >> thank you. we spoke to a sergean
