jason jensen has spent almost 18 years in the military, including 14 in the nebraska army national guard, and he has two comrades on the display who were killed by a roadside bomb in iraq. "our commandor came up front of formation and told us that we had lost two of our own and it's something that i know it's a day that i will never forget. i had to come home from leave a week prior and the thoughts through my head is what if it happened it could have been me...it could be your last day at any moment," said wakefield veterans of foreign wars quartermaster adjutant and nebraska army national guard soldier, jason jensen. jensen toured in iraq back in 2004 where his mission was to work on armored trucks and afghanistan in 20-10 where he was in charge of the guard towers. they protected not only the u-s, but also other countries against the taliban and iraqi terrorist groups. you would know them as recruiting stations, many army reserve centers, national guard armories, where they don't have dedicated assigned force protection or specifically law enforcement officials. you may remember the september 2013 washington navy yard shooting where there were mass casualties. not long after that there was a second fort hood shooting in april of 2014. while the response to that incident showed we made significant progress and were better able to respond, it also highlighted the complexities of trying to prevent these types of incidents. in the 2014 fort hood shooting, the shooter was not motivated by radical anti-american agenda, but rather a series of problems that spiraled out of control which eventually led him to lash out at those who he perceived wronged him. most recently, the chattanooga incident showed how attacks can occur away from military installations. they can occur in communities, large and small, where members of the army reserve and national guard live and work. attacks involving military personnel and facilities are often used as propaganda. regard

army national guard had just participated in the parade, they were there, a lot of the stillwater medical and police were there. and if there was any blessing towards the end of a parade usually is when the fire trucks and the ambulances kind of bring up the rear, and they were all right there. leo was hurt pretty bad, but he was breathing and had a pulse and we -- a lot of folks gathered around and helped out, and they determined he was -- had to go -- airlifted to o.u. medical. and, you know, for a few hours we weren't 100% sure where he was in the state or if he had flown to dallas or where he was, and a lot of us that were less injured went over to stillwater medical center. as quickly as we could we came back down to oklahoma city and kind of stumbled and fumbled but we found where he was and found the rest of the cowboy family that were there with their loved ones and stuff and just waited for the good news. and -- or just what was going on. wanted to mention dr. joshua jeerman and dr. martin at the trauma center, they kept us posted on leo's condition. news is starting to improve.

when we talk about off installation facilities such as army reserve centers and national guard armories, they reach out to their local community to conduct these exercises that you mentioned. with local law enforcement establishing relationship, many members of the army reserve and national guard r also local law enforcement members so it's a natural fit and a natural tie to bring that together so those exercises are conducted periodically and we try to combine them if there's multiple units in a building rather than having local law enforcement reaching out three, four, five times to the same location. that's the important part of that. in addition it's continual sharing of information as was d mentioned, once a year we meet the local police and two years later i roll out and somebody else comes in. it's important to have the dialogue and get to know each other, share informings about what's going on in the community and that works both way, both between military members and law enforcement as well. a key point was made by al that men hill with tear were transient, we're there for a sh
