in the fall we did collect prices in a variety of retail stores in berkeley. then we also did the same thing in these other cities. and the reason we're looking at price increases is because this tax is unlike a sales tax that is charged at register where consumers may or may not even notice it. this tax is paid by distributors. so it's a penny per ounce. and the thought is that this might decrease consumption more than a sales tax because it might lead to higher retail prices. >> so what did you find in regard to people purchase something >> we haven't yet looked at the purchasing. but we did find that for sugary drinks overall, the price increase in berkeley, $0.05. and for soda the increase was even greater. it was about 70% of the amount of the tax. >> so increasing the prize price of a -- price of a sugary drink, this is kind of the first critical step in discouraging consumption of such a drink? >> that's right. and the thought is that if a consumer goes to the aisle or benge, and they see a higher price tag, maybe they're pervaded from buying that item.

alex savidge is live in berkeley. >> reporter: gasia, good morning. this professor is one of the biggest names in astronomy and he is on probation after apologizing for inappropriate behavior with women who was his students. at least one of his accusers believes the professors punishment does not go far enough and should be more severe. accusations against uc berkeley astronomy professor jack surfaced last year. that investigation resulted in a warning against the professor for violations of the schools sexual harassment policy. according to buzz feed, four women complained that marcy repeatedly subjected students to unwanted advances. those complaints date back to 2001. now the university reached an agreement with marcy, establishing what officials call a zero tolerance policy about his future behavior. any other violations of sexual harassment policy will result in his suspension or dismissile. marcy is one of the leads leading experts on planets outside of our solar system. he issued a public apology on his faculty page. it reads in part while i do
