the flood warnings have been extended into the delaware river right up the delaware into lower bucks county. and beach erosion with this storm system that is going to continue into late tonight and tomorrow. we could be looking at more flooding in the area. right now the radar screen shows steady rain in philadelphia, the rain is coming up from the south through delaware and south jersey. you see some steady rainfall in lower burlington county at the shore for atlantic city and showers will turn heavier as the day goes on. the showers will produce 1 to 3 inches of rain during the day today. along with the strong gusty winds. so the forecast for today, hour by hour, is calling for rain and wind. 20-mile-an-hour winds at 7:00, 18-mile-an-hour winds at 10:00 with stronger gusts and the gusts willble increasing this afternoon as the rain intensifies during the afternoon hours. we'll go through the forecast hour by hour with the futurecast when i come back in 10 minutes. jessica boyington is watching first alert traffic. >> we're on 295 now in new jersey, some wet roads here. you can see

erosion is also a problem at the delaware beaches. >> nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong shows us the damage left behind in bethany beach. >> reporter: it wasn't hurricane sandy, but some spots it felt worse. >> three nights we couldn't go to sleep, the wind was blasting on the house for three days straight. >> reporter: today we get a good look at the damage, a surfer was enjoying the waves, but the people at the beach were shocked to find cliffs where it used to be a gradual rolling dune. >> 15-foot drop off over here. dropped off 15 foot. all the sand is just totally gone. >> reporter: in duey, the streets flooded, but in bethany the damage is more significant. access to the beach is now very limited. past the gates it's like a cliff that drops down into the ocean. once all the water calms down and the sand dries out, thailg be able to get a better look at the damage and how to fix it. some of the dunes took a pretty good beating. he says a lot of the fences they put up to protect the dunes, most of the fences are out at sea. the water is still high in many spots and the cle

. >> reporter: yeah, rick, whether it's a hoax or not, colleges and universities in the delaware valley are all taking this very seriously. so far this threat has had a huge impact on law enforcement and school communities like villanova university here. >> it's a scary environment. you can never prepare for that. >> reporter: the threat is nonspecific mentioning only a university near philadelphia. every college and university in the area even the university of delaware have sent out warnings to students and staff to be alert. it is frightening for students and many appear to be skipping classes today. >> am i first class today it was usually around 35 kids in there, it was about ten kids. the classes were decimated and the normal coffee lines, everything is lower than usual. >> reporter: schools all over the delaware valley are afterring up security and turning to local police departments for help. radnor township police has extra officers on duty patrolling four college campuses including villanova, they take every threat seriously. this one stands out. >> what is amplifying this the

rain around right now, pretty heavy and moving through new jersey, also delaware. so for the areas that haven't seen the rain yet today, you're starting to see it and it is coming down pretty hard, especially across the expressway approaching atlantic county, so it is still raining in the philadelphia area, but you see the clearing north and west through the lehigh valley. that's going to continue moving in as we go overnight. so this line of showers and storms approaching the shore, i would say within the next hour or two, and then we'll see it all clearing out by about 10:00, 11:00 tonight. in the meantime, take your umbrella with you. temperatures are getting cooler, too. so if you are heading out tonight, i would say maybe the umbrella for the next couple of hours, but then with the cool temperatures you're going to want the jacket and the jacket through the weekend because we're going to see sunshine developing with temperatures in the mid 60s for both saturday and sunday. so nice changes from today, but we do have those wet roads out there. >> yeah, we do. ho

you see slightly steadier stuff near the mouth of the delaware bay and southern delaware. later this afternoon and tonight we'll see heavier rain push in. as we look outside we have cloudy skies across the region. notice the camera bouncing down the shore. part of the issue today is going to be strong winds at the shore and coastal flooding there. that's the center of the action. i'll talk about that in a moment. the temple is 55 degrees -- the temperature is 55 degrees, it's on the cool side. the winds north northeast 23 miles per hour. a wet one and windy one, the closer you go to the shore, the more you'll see of the strong winds and the potential for flooding. as we look at future tracker 6 you can see between now and noon we start to see some of the heavier cells begin to come into areas around i-95. it's later this afternoon that the heavy rain starts to push in. that continues straight on into the evening hours at 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. where we see breaks. raining this morning, but getting intense today and tonight. 53 degrees by 8:00 a.m. 53 by 11:00 a.m. 55 by

even about 40 miles an hour, georgetown, delaware. we're going to see these strong wind gusts 40 to 50 miles an hour as we go through the night tonight and into tomorrow, a high wind advisory is in effect for the coastal areas. and it's going to be a very windy day in philadelphia tomorrow. we break out and see any kind of sunshine at all, we could see wind gusts well above 40 miles an hour. now, as far as the tides are concerned, that's the biggest problem, rehoboth, high tides. one in italics is the worst high tide. moderate to major flooding at both of these times, saturday and sunday, even though we're not expecting a lot of rain sunday. cape may, these are the times, about 1:00 in the afternoon and 2:00 in the afternoon on sunday. farther up the coast, atlantic city, little after 12:00, little after 1:00. now, we expect this heavy rain band to continue to move up to the northwest, there will be more showers, heavy at times during the night tonight, and as we go into tomorrow morning, there will be some more pockets of heavier rai

we could see some areas coming down heavier now in delaware bay and in southern delaware moving through northern sussex to kent county. the showers will be intensifying. i think the heaviest rainfall is going to be moving in during the afternoon and early evening hours for our region. but we have to deal with this this morning, and it's going to stay with us on through the day and through the late evening hours. the heavier rainfall way to the south but this system will continue to pump moisture into the region even into the weekend. so i'm not expecting as much rain for saturday and sunday as what we will see today. and then there is joaquin. joaquin now a powerful category 4 storm with 130-mile-per-hour winds, continues to just pound the central bahamas. barely moving along, now at northwest at 3 miles an hour. so it started to make its turn that we've been predicting for some time. that will take it just to the north by early tomorrow morning. still as a strong category 4, finally pulling away from the bahamas which has been pounding now for days. that northerly track, becomes more n

as you come up the delaware bay it becomes the delaware river. the port closest to the atlantic ocean on the delaware river is part of wilmington. ships are coming there throughout the day, night and weekend. the ships don't come in and spend a week. ships don't come in the port of i wilmington and spend a day. they may come in for four hours or six hours. but they're there and then they're going. but when a ship is sitting in the port of wilmington or any other port, the shipper, whoever owns that boat is not making any money. so they want to be in and they want to be out, and that's the way they do their business. it's important for whoever is coming in and using them by truck, to bring goods, to put on that ship to send around the world, there may be a very short window of time to get there. and if you're stuck in traffic, the kind of traffic we saw early on, you're stuck in traffic early on, you may miss that window when the ship is in the port, whether it's wilmington or some other port. that's another reason why in a just in time economy, w
