let's turn things over to meteorologist jeff ranieri. i know you've been watching an upcoming storm. >> not a lot of rainfall this weekend. but you can see the system offshore. the core of the shore is expected to head to the north. it's that bottom edge that could give us showers in our weekend forecast. let's detail saturday first. what you'll find is for tomorrow, it stays warm inland. we'll gradually start to see numbers trying to drop, though. 82 in the south bay. san francisco at 70. also the north bay at 83. the other thing besides the cooling temperatures, we'll find the high clouds continuing to increase across the bay. not a super sunny day throughout saturday's forecast. as we head throughout sunday, we'll have the slight chance of maybe some spotty showers. looks like the best chance would be marin, napa and sonoma counties in the north bay. we'll see temperatures around 83 degrees and a slight chance in san francisco with 69. tri-valley will have 82. south bay expecting 79 degrees. now, we have been, of course, following hur

. >> chief meteorologist jeff ranieri tracking those conditions. where do things stand now, jeff? >> right now the storm system is starting to pull away from puerto vallarta. watch how much this has started to diminish. now that it moved inland, it's starting to shrink at the current moment. down from the max winds of 200 miles per hour, to 100 miles per hour. pressure is also rising. another sign of this storm system weakening. how close of a miss is this storm system from puerto vallarta? it's only an 80-mile distance, so very, very close miss here for that town. we do want to underscore a lot of mexico is getting hit very hard right now from this storm system that is still a category 2. remnants of the storm head right for texas saturday and sunday, and that will cause flooding issues. this storm system was able to go from a 40-mile-per-hour system to 200 miles per hour in just 36 hours, all due to el nino and the warm waters in the pacific. if we did not have that happening, this storm system would not be here today. i'm tracking more and have more in just a few minutes. >>> m

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking what this means for the nation, of course here in the bay area. jeff? >> yeah, it is continuing good news with that new outlook from noaa. it's exactly as we anticipated, warmer than average temperatures likely for the midwest right on back to the west. that may not be good news for the sierra and also getting colder storms and the snow pack and cooler weather from the southeast into texas. the rainfall potential, it's a classic el nino-enhanced situation. that is across the lower third of the nation we're expecting wetter than average weather in the southeast, texas, also back into california. drier than average weather for the midwest stretching right on back to the pacific north west. california, above average rainfall chances in the bay area but the highest chance of above average rainfall expected right on down to los angeles. as we boil these numbers down even more with that el nino impact, that will have us at a 40% chance of above-average rain from mid-december through march. a 33% chance of average rain and a 27% chance of a dry win

let's bring in jeff ranieri. i know you're keeping a close eye on what el nino could bring for us. >> what exactly causes that heavier rainfall here across california. we have the storms moving in on this westerly storm track that's pretty typical. we get the jet stream pushing up from the south and it's all about that subtropical jet stream that helps to provide copious amounts of moisture. if it goes right here towards the bay area, it's like a big hose on california we could see a ton of rainfall. it's all about where the subtropical jet stream sets up and the best potential of rain mid-december through march. we are expecting the possibility of a few showers mainly in the morning and then clearing by the afternoon leaving us with 77 in the south bay and san francisco at 86. we will have warmer temperatures coming our way with 82 in the south bay. the tri-valley 84 and san francisco 69. speaking of this weekend, watch out for hurricane joaquin. right now winds at 105 miles per how. it's on a track towards the

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is with us now. jeff, you've been tracking and crunching numbers for months. what are you seeing now? >> right now everything is lining up exactly as expected. sea surface temperature is 2.4 degrees warmer than average. so we're still on track with 1997 conditions. now, what exactly would bring us the most rainfall here across the west? take a look at this map. what you're going going to see is typical westerly storm systems. we definitely need those to happen to get above-average rainfall. the key to getting copious amounts of rainfall will be the subtropical jet stream. where that sets up, that's where we could have some of the heaviest rainfall. the big question now, though, is nobody knows exactly where the subtropical jet stream will be pointed. it will be like a big fire hose right on the state. typically it does end up near southern california. we'll just have to wait and see on this. one thing we definitely do know, as of today, forecast models continue to show above average rain chances mid

jeff ranieri has been taking a look at that. some people could get more. >> that is exactly right. you know, when we take a look at el nino and the rain predictions, there's many different layers we take a look at. let's give you the scenario that would provide us with some of the heavier rainfall. here's what we need to have happen. the first thing is the typical westerly storms moving through the pacific. the second thing that is a major catalyst during el nino years is the subtropical jet stream. where that subtropical jet stream points, that's where we will have the heaviest rainfall. combins in with the westerly storms and really helps to amplify it. in 95% of the cases, it tends to point down towards southern california. and that's where we will get the heaviest rainfall. but what would that mean for the bay area? at this point, it means that the south bay would have the highest chance of getting these el nino impacted storms, and have the highest risk of flooding the way the scenarios are pointing right now. we'll have more details on the storm this weekend in about 15 minut

here's jeff ranieri. >> great weather coming our way. the only problem we had today were the gusty winds that were drier and also hotter across the bay area. not uncomfortable, though, in the south bay. you can see right now, 79 degrees, peninsula checking in at 82. where those winds are the strongest, that's where we are finding some of the hottest temperatures. we take you to the north bay, you can see winds sustained at 13 miles per hour. gusting to 20, 10 mile and plus visibility to the golden gate bridge, which you can see there. no fog tonight. the winds will begin to calm down for tomorrow morning. that will give us radiational cooling and temperatures will drop down to chilly numbers especially in the north bay. tomorrow morning possibly as low as 51 degrees. san francisco starting off with 60 and patchy fog frrb the the south bay, 65 degrees. gusty north and easterly winds today. tomorrow, they'll come back as you can see the wind direction again. hotter wind moving in from the interior valleys. i don't think it will be as gusty
