kristin thorne is live at the scene. she has the latest for us. what do we know? >> reporter: here we are five hours after this fire started and still it is showing no signs of stopping. i want to show you here showing you a live look of this row of stores. the fire chief tells me they believe the fire started in the basement of the deli and spread throughout the rest of these stores and to a three-story apartment building which essentially was right behind that plume of smoke you're seeing right there. that's where that apartment building was. it collapsed about an hour into this fire starting. thankfully the four people who lived there got out just in time. the fire started around 1:00 this morning. again, this group of stores in mount vernon. those stores include a deli, a laundromat and a pizza place. 40 firefighters now on scene from pelham and yonkers as well. the fire chief tells me each of these businesses have a separate roof. the fire essentially is hiding itself. it keeps jumping in between the separate roofs. they have to tear apart the separate roofs

kristin thorne is at the scene with the very latest. >> reporter: the officer has been on the force for the past 14 years assigned to the manhattan south area. now recovering at north shore university. just for observation. i want to show you at cunningham park the bathroom back here the alleged assault happened. police say a woman assaulted this officer while she was trying to rob her of her purse. >> she reported she was cut in the neck on the left side. by a sharp object. >> reporter: police say the victim was walking her dog in cunningham park around 2:00 this afternoon when a woman came up behind her around a restroom and tried to take her purse. a struggle ensued, police say the 50 a -- 55-year-old suspect's last the officer in the throat. >> we did recover a pair of scissors in the area. we are unclear whether or not those were used. and we are continuing the search at this point. >> reporter: a parks worker nearby heard the officer screamed and ran to help. >> parks department employee watched the subject flee. was able to provide a description. and when the subject was apprehen

here's kristin thorne. >> reporter: luis flores, jr. says his faith is what has gotten him lieu the past five months. he's been living a nightmare after a little boy said flores, jr. took pictures of him inside a restaurant bathroom. >> it's hurt me, hurt my family. >> reporter: flores, jr. was inside hibachi grill on north babylon may 17th but he said from the beginning he wasn't the person who took pictures of the 8-year-old boy. the boy told police he saw a hand come over the stall and saw a flash going off. flores, jr. was arrested days later. he had to go in to hiding because people were threatening him. we spoke with him over face time in june and even back then he said he was innocence. >> i feel very violated inside, victimized, and i'm innocent all the way. i didn't do this. >> reporter: prosecutors agree, stating in court today based on the review and evidence, there is insufficient evidence available to mount a successful prosecution against this defendant. >> this is definitely what i could ask for even more. i'm so grateful

reporter kristin thorne is there with more on what happened. kristen? >> reporter: a piece of good news for everyone. we just got an update from investigators about the officer's condition. her injury is minor, she's going to be okay. a 50-year-old officer, been on the force for the last 14 years. manhattan south area, she's now i want to show you cunningham park, we're going to show you where that alleged assault apparently happened. as a result of an attempted robbery. >> the officer was here, off- duty walking her dog. and she was attempting to walk into that restroom here behind me. when she was approached from behind by a female who attempted to take her pocketbook from her. >> reporter: the suspect, a 55- year-old woman, pulled out some sort of sharp object and slashed the officer in her throat. a parks worker here at cunningham park ran over to help. the officer was able to point out the suspect and the worker began to pursue the suspect. at the same time the officer called 911 to report her injuries. police immediately flooded the area. >> the f

kristin thorne is live in holtsville in suffolk county with more. >> we're talking about seven school districts, 10 school buildings in total which have tested positive for the airborne bacteria. all this testing is being done after the state department of health put in emergency regulations after that deadly outbreak of legionnaires' disease in the bronx. >> we trust the school and they're good to our kids so i'd say they'll keep them safe. >> reporter: that was the reaction from most parents we spoke with today. the legionella bacteria has been found in at least seven districts including the mount sinai district, hauppauge, port washington school districts. most of the cooling towers have since been disinfected. there are no reports of students, staff, or teachers falling ill due to the bacteria. parents are just learning about it today. >> what have they told you so far >> we got a phone call today that they found traces in three schools. this being one of them. >> are you overly concerned? >> no, not at all. >> you're nost not takinge -- you're not taking her out of school? >> no.
