nbc bay area's marianne favro has more on the latest with the investigation. and marianne this is a shocking crime. >> reporter: it really is, and it is only the second homicide of the year for fremont. so it is even more shocking because murders are very uncommon here in this city. i'm here on monroe avenue and this is where police say a mother in her 60s was killed inside her apartment complex. police believe her own son, 31-year-old omar pettigan killed her. police say they don't have a motive for the murder. >> when officers arrived they were able to locate a deceased female in her 60s. the police investigation led this to believe it was actually a homicide and that the woman deceased was actually the victim of the homicide. >> reporter: police are asking for your help finding pettigan. they believe he may be armed so if you do spot him investigators say you should call 911 immediately. he is believed to frequent oakland and san francisco. police are not saying tonight how he allegedly killed his mother, only that it was an extremely violent crime scene. a

nbc bay area's marianne favro joins us live at the cho center the market on center road. this is left a lot of damage to this store. >> reporter: a tremendous amount of damage. you can see here that the cho center market is a totalpv]f l. all night long, we've talked to people. they've come by, saddened to learn their neighborhood grocery store went up in flames. >> just 20 minutes after it start add, the one alarm fire quickly grew to four alarms as flames shot more than 100 feet into the air. consuming the cho center market and scorching several nearby businesses. >> the fire also threatened the caribe mobile home parks forring dozens to evacuate. there are no reports of injury, but the fire got close enough to buckle some roofs. today people stopped by to take pictures of the devastation. many consider the long time market an old friend. johnny has been coming here since he was a kid. >> shock, i see it's burned down. like a part of history. >> cindy shopped in the market just hours before the fire broke out. >> this is the main grocery store in this area. >> reporter

the fire broke out off of calaveras ridge drive and that's where we join marianne favro. some of these people were probably wore creed, should they stay, should they go. >> reporter: two homes were forced to evacuate but this easily could have been so much worse, if you take a look at the hillside you can see how it's blackened. a few yards away there is this huge home. firefighters attacked this very quickly, they got in with hand crews and also from the air and because of that they were able to hold this fire at four acres. cal fire helicopters dropped flame retardant on the fast moving fire. >> it's scary. it's scary. i hope it doesn't turn to the side. >> reporter: firefighters got the call around 2:30 this afternoon. several engines from milpitas fire along with cal fire and the spring valley volunteer fire department launched into attack mode from the ground and the air. two homes were forced to evacuate. firefighters faced several challenges including increasing winds an steep terrain and the drought made the situation even worse. >> we still do have some extreme f

marianne favro where three wineries and a nonprofit are joining forces trying to raise cash for those poor folks. >> reporter: and they certainly need it, jessica. you can see that the fund-raiser is already under way. you can hear the music and about 200 people will come out here tonight to enjoy a barbecue and a nice pizza oven and music and wine. tonight alpha omega and the napa valley wine festival are joining forces to help the fire victims. those victims have a long road ahead. that road began with epa crews coming in to remove hazards. epa crews used radiation detectors to check the air surrounding several scorched homes in middletown today. once an area is cleared, they combed through debris looking for household products that could put cleanup crews at risk. one of the things epa crews are looking for are heaters like this that may still have propane tanks inside them. they didn't have to look far. not only did they find propane tanks but also paint cans and other household products that could be dangerous. >> the thing that scares me the most are any compressed gas cylinders

nbc bay area's marianne favro joining us live from saratoga with more on the woman who is in this crash. marianne, do we know anything about her condition? >> reporter: we know she is hospitalized tonight at doctor's medical center in modesto, suffering from major injuries. a chp spokesperson has identified her as jeongsoo yang who is in her 50s. here is a photo of her from her facebook page. she is a saratoga mother of three. the chp says this is one of the worst crashes officers have responded to in years. a mercedes suv slammed head-on into a neeson maxima. the driver in the nissan died, and his passenger is hospitalized with major injuries. four people in the mercedes died. jeongsoo yang was the only survivor in that suv. tonight we talked to one of her neighbors in saratoga. >> she is very sweet and liked the organizer of the family. and also the gardner. >> reporter: investigators have not determined which vehicle had crossed over the double yellow line. the accident sparked a fire and closed the highway for several hours. investigators say because the victims were badly burned, t

nbc bay area's marianne favro joins us from san jose mineta international with what went wrong. traveling is tough when everything is going right. >> that is true. and they were even tougher today especially at local airports. it all began with a computer glitch this morning that was system-wide. and because of that glitch, even tomorrow southwest passengers are asked to arrive at least two hours before their flights. travel trouble for hundreds of southwest passengers across the nation today. >> it just poor. it's poor customer service. it's poor information. >> reporter: they can blame technology. >> we love technology, but at the same time it's kind of frustrating. >> reporter: a computer glitch shut down the airline's website and forced them to go old school, manually hand checking in passengers. >> everything is handwritten right now. >> reporter: and that slowed things down a lot, including here at oakland international airport. >> from seattle was about one hour. >> it was about 45-minute delay. >> reporter: some passengers also experienced delays at mineta san jose inter
