nbc's tracie potts following developments from capitol hill now. we're waiting to hear about front-runners, right, tracie? >> exactly. remember, there were two others. jason chaffetz who said he was absolutely stunned by this and lesser knowned daniel webster who was endorsed by the conservatives who were against conservatives but even now says he doesn't think that this will make him a front-runner. paul ryan, the powerful bunt chair is someone john boehner has had his eye on for your the job but ryan said he's not interested. he's not running. both boehner and mccarthy are reportedly trying to get him to reconsid reconsider, change his mind. given all that, you can pretty much understand the situation here. things are in turmoil. mccarthy said he will hold onto his number two job as majority leader. that shuffles things on the back end because people were already vying for that position. john boehner who was to leave at the end of the month has said he'll stick around until they get somebody in place number answers but a lot of questions on the h

i'm tracie potts in washington, now back to you. an american commando was killed yesterday during a rescue mission in iraq. it happened when u-s, iraqi and kurdish troops descended on an isis prison near hawija. e commando is the first american soldier killed in action in iraq in four years. the mission saved 70 hostages from possible execution by isis militants. the prisoners included iraqi security forces. paul ryan announced last night that he is officially running the wisconsin representativ e sent a letter to members of the h hse republican conference... informing them of his candidacy. returning to his office on capitol hill with his d.c. chief of staff... ryan did not give further comment. the congressman told reporters his letter "speaks for itself." the memo is ryan's rallying cry republicans... for a more conservative agenda... and a unified g-o-p under his leadership. being out-t-umped by a republican rival in iowa. a quinnipiac university poll of likely iowa republican caucus-goers says ben carson now leads the g-o-p pre

nbc's tracie potts has more on the late-night developments from capitol hill now. tracie, representative ryan really coming in with a list of demands. he says it has to happen if he's going to take the job. >> exactly, aaron. he initially told the republican caucus he wasn't interested now he's willing to step up to the plate if they allow his family time. he doesn't want that affected, but he also says he wants to be the unity candidate now, not after a device sieve election. he also says they need to come up with some proposals and essentially not be the party of no as democrats have called them. he wants to change the rules so it's not so easy for smaller groups within the party to get rid of the speaker. friday is the deadline foort party to accept those rules and move forward. he has said that he will do the job if they accept those rules. meantime, jason chaffetz is out. he's decided to step down and support paul ryan. so we'll find out in the next two few days, is he the unity candidate that can bring warring factions of the republican party together and if
