wmur news 9 at 5:00. jean: the victim of a vicious dog attack in bow says he likely survived because of his experience with wild animals. good evening, i' m jean mackin. josh: i' m josh mcelveen. the man was attacked by a pair of pit bulls while walking his dog. wmur' s jennifer crompton has his story. jennifer: it was down this path a deputy officer with fish and game was walking with his dog when they were viciously attacked by two pitbulls. dave says it was a surprising counter. eight-year-old lady next to him lady was grabbed by the neck and shaken as dave felt another dog jumped from behind, pulling him to the ground. he fought it off with pepper spray. a 10 minute battle that included the owner of the home where the dogs lived. dave able to grab lady and run for help. she is still recovering from 30 staples. the pitbulls still at that home. he is convinced if they had attacked a woman or child, the catastrophic. coming up, how the laws' hands are tied in cases like this. jean: a compound once at the

wmur's ray brewer explains why. reporter: the baby's mother who was allegedly assaulted by carroll was here in court but didn't want to say anything. one of the things carroll is accused of doing is attempting to terrorize her by telling her he was going to take their 1-month-old baby girl and throw her in the trash. appearing by video in court, thomas carroll listened, occasionally shaking his head as then spoke. (inaudible) a request the judge agreed to. however, court documents give a glimpse into what police believe happened. friday morning police were called to 72 bow street in franklin. according to the affidavit, carroll had locked himself in the home with his 1-month-old daughter and was threatening to hurt her. >> once we learned that there was a hostage and especially a baby being a hostage, i certainly wanted to ensure the safety of the child and anybody else in the residence. reporter: after an hour of negotiations, police were able to arrest carroll and take him into custody, but not before he threatene

i'm andy hershberger, wmur news 9. josh: in franklin tonight a father is charged after police were called to a home to investigate an alleged case of domestic violence. and then learned he was holding his 1-month-old hostage. stephanie woods is live with more on this case. reporter: josh, police say they got a call around 8:30 this morning that a man assaulted his wife, locked her out of the house and barricaded himself and his baby girl inside. state troopers and franklin police say they rushed to 72 west bow street and surrounded the home. 33-year-old thomas carroll was allegedly standing in the doorway, holding his baby girl and threatening to stab officers with a screwdriver if they stepped on his property. police say they talked carroll into taking the baby out of the dangerous cold and setting her down inside. carroll allegedly struggled by officers tackled him to the ground and took him into custody. tonight carroll is facing several domestic violence charges, being held on $25,000 cash bail and will be arraigne

mike cronin, wmur news 9. tom: police say a situation that put a neighborhood on high alert has been resolved. officers say a man was threatening to harm himself with a gun. he was outside behind his home, but when police arrived, he ran into the woods. police warned people to stay inside until they found him. officers convinced him to surrender around 9:00. he was taken into custody for his own safety. there is no longer a threat to the neighborhood. investigating a shooting. police say an 18-year-old woodshop shot around 8:00 near gill stadium. he was shot in his abdomen, but the full extent of his injuries is not known. investigators say while details are limited, the shooting does not appear to be random. tonight, a death is under investigation in guilford. the attorney general' s office says they are aware of an untimely death, but at this point, investigators aren' t saying where the woman involved was found dead. toxicology reports are expected to determine the exact cause of death. shelley: the america

now, wmur news 9. sean: good afternoon, everybody. i' m sean mcdonald. we begin with that major water main break on brown avenue that shutdowns avril street in the queen city -- shut down several streets in the queen city. wmur' s andy hershberger is live. andy: this water main break is causing a variety of problems. first is the traffic castle. this is the intersection of town avenue and south beech street. you can see there is a big hole that have developed. they are trying to excavate it now. traffic has been stopped coming southbound, going northbound, eastbound on south beech. this area is virtually shut down. also on exit 293, exit 2 coming northbound side of 293. that rim has been closed so they can clean up some of the debris that washed down that direction. ' s second issue is that 700 -- several hundred people in this area are without water. a main burst this morning, and tens of thousands of gallons of water wash suede is intersection. the pavement buckled, the road was shut down, and crews began to try to fix the problem. phil: what we are tr

wmur' s kristen carosa has her story. kristen: mary morin carlin was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36 years old. she has just wrapped up her treatment. now her focus is shifting to help others going through the same thing and reminding them that no one fights this alone. mary morin carlin grew up in bedford. >> i graduated from unh and i served as miss new hampshire. kristen: since then, she moved to new york, she got married, and had a baby, not realizing her life was about to change. >> i was in shock. i thought here i am, i' m 36 years old and i have a 2-year-old daughter and a husband. her right breast in february and went to her doctor. after several tests, she was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer. >> a week and a half after being diagnosed, i had both breasts removed and then rested for three weeks, and then i started eight rounds of chemotherapy over the course of six months. kristen: through this process, mary has discovered she is high-risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. >> the next step is in nove

amy coveno, wmur news 9. josh: on the physician of the heroin epidemic, governor hassan is looking at putting emergency rules into place when it comes to the prescribing of painkillers. many consider opioid to be at the root of the heroin problem. governor hassan's office has floated a draft proposal within the medical community of new hampshire looking for feedback. suggestions include limiting prescriptions to a five-day supply for some patients and the elimination of the use of fen that mill for noncancer patients, as well as the review of outdated practices. >> the guidelines in the board of medicine rules right now say that the chance of a patient is low. we know that that isn't true. we also know from looking at other states that there are best practices we should be implementing. >> all of this needs to be done with public hearings and to do it appropriately in a process that makes sure that we have not impacted the ability of doctors to practice medicine. josh: doctors involvement is a very important
