ben carson? is cnn being fair to carson? he's now the republican front-runner, according to "the wall street journal" and nbc news. i have long admired his personal story and respected his reputation as a physician. in fact, i remember first hearing his name years ago when practicing law, and he performed a complicated surgery on a young boy from pittsburgh who was my client. the parents of that young man regarded dr. carson as a godsend. the story of his rise from a small home in detroit to world class pediatric neurosurgeon is the type that makes all of us proud of our country. but some of what he himself has written and said about his background is eyebrow raising. that he once punched a classmate with his face in his hand wrapped around a lock leaving a bloody three-inch gash in the boy's forehead or that he attempted to attack his own mother with a hammer, that he tried to attack his young friend spared only by a belt buckle that snapped the blade. these stories are important to carson's narrative of personal redemption

carson is right. if you listen to rachel maddow yesterday on "meet the press" she was carrying on about his obviously unqualified to be president because he said you get a scholarship to west point where everybody gets full pay -- gets a full ride at west point so number ever gets a scholarship to west point. but really, what are they picking on? stuff that happened decades ago that is very minor. nobody hays ever said he was actually born to wealthy parents from the hamptons or that he wasn't a brain surgeon or he didn't save lives or run a hospital. all this stuff is minor and just -- the press -- certain branches of the press are trying to tear down his credibility by attacking very small points and pretending that have some meaning. dr. carson is right they're desperate to stop this man. thank you very much. >> host: paul you might be interested in thedder toal board of "the wall street journal," they have a piece today they carson crucible crucible. they say mar carson says voters want someone wh

carson say in response to that? >> well, i think a lot of these allegations are a bit absurd, but at the same time, you know, the allegations contradict each other. over the past week a lot of people have alleged that dr. carson lied about these accounts of his past, and in fact what we've seen is that everyone of these accounts has been backed up. for instance, buzzfeed provided a story just very recently about a yale alumnus who confirms the details of dr. carson's anecdote about the psychology test. dr. carson's mother substantiated his account of the knife attack in a "parade" magazine interview in 1997. and so in many ways all of those people who have alleged that dr. carson has somehow lied, they've been proven wrong. and now someone is saying, well, because dr. carson was once someone who had a bad temper that he's somehow unif it ffit office. what dr. carson has made very clear it's something he used to have a bad temper and it is not something he's proud of but he's gotten over that in part because of his o

carson on his biography. but one of the things that maybe interesting is what the moderators have been saying about how they will handle the debate. they are reacting to the cnbc debate i got criticized, and they're talking about being substantive. that does not necessarily lend itself for an opening for him to go in on the bio stuff. mark: some of the moderators suggested they would ask about it. p has been criticized for disappearing when questions become policy-oriented. -- be interesting to see if he weighs in on other issues. dr. carson, same thing. he has not done policy in these debates. less to me about the question of whether he has exaggerated his biography, does he compete on policy tonight? campbell: to your point, neither of them has been tested on this in any setting. i tried to act dr. carson about education policy. he has a philosophy may be the best way to put it. they have ideas, but they cannot articulate how that translates into policy or how you govern around it. mark: in the past debates
