charlie: bruce riddell is here. he served in the cia for 30 years and was also national security advisor to war presidents. his new book is called "jfk us forgotten crisis." gem ofalled a minor elegant history writing. i'm pleased to have him back at this table. you love the idea of an elegant gem of historical writing. you said to me, this is the most fine i've had. what was it about the experience ?hat resonated with you bang bang bruce: we're talking a lot about character of a president because we are in our presidential campaign season. this is a man who demonstrated unusual character in the white house. he faced some of the hardest decisions any president in american history has faced. about the invasion of india which comes simultaneously with the cuban missile crisis. he handled to huge global crises simultaneously. in both, he showed unusual depth of thinking about the problem and thinking it through, not necessarily doing the easy thing or the thing his advisers told him to do, but in the end, coming up wit

"it took about five years to actually wanted to go live with it," said bruce johnson. by no means is it a large display. but what it does get--- a lot of cars to stop. "i think it looks nice and pretty," said jesse vargas. bruce leshan joins us live from covenant church in gaithersburg with more. bruce? >> reporter: yeah mike. really just an incredibly sad day out here at covenant life church. but the one thing a lot of mourners are taking comfort in is the fact that officer leotta died doing what he loved. taking drunk drivers off the road. hundreds and hundreds of motorcycle officers and others escorted his family and body here to the church. the church is back to overflowing family members that are now remembering remarkable days with this young man who was just 24 years old and only two years on the force. he raised his hand and volunteered to serve on the holiday drunk driving task force. he was out on the road on december 3. he had somebody pulled over. when somebody else, a suspected drunk driver smashed in to his car and in to him. leotta spent nearly a week on life support at suburban hospital before his family decided to let him go. his organs donated to give life to others. a lot of people out here talking about maryland's drunk driving laws. among the weakest in the natio

bruce: the problem of china and india has not gone away. this war more than 50 years ago has still not been resolved. the largest disputed order in the world is between china and india. it drives the arms race that goes on today. the nuclear arms race between china, india and pakistan is probably the most dangerous arms race in the world. john: i want to talk a little bit about jackie kennedy who you , wrote about in the book and played a key diplomatic role which is not really the role that most people in memory or the history think of her as ever playing in that administration. bruce: the first lady played a huge role in how the president interacted with both india and pakistan. she hosted the leaders of both. she came up with quite clever ways to host these foreign leaders. for example, the pakistani dictator was given a state dinner at mount vernon. the only time our first president's home has ever been used for a state dinner. in 1962, she traveled to india and pakistan. she was the first american first lady to travel abroad in the era

bruce, who are you going to be talking to coming up? city officials met today to year with the flood control system. the flood control program manager says in 2015 the city transitions from flood recovery to the control stage. crews have met with the community and have laid out plans for a series of levies, removable walls and permanent walls to protect the community from the cedar river. "while we are not flooding today, it's just an emphasis of why we need to do this. we are having record flows in the cedar river for the month of december. just imagine if this was happening in the summer, we would need this." they also discussed a big project that's slated to begin in late 2016. they're already preparing land at the former sinclair site in a tv9 follow-up... cedar rapids could soon make some changes to the nuisance property ordinance. that ordinance holds landlords accountable for the upkeep and number of emergency calls to their properties. the change will make sure the city doesn't penalize crime victims who are just trying to get e
