as congress moves forward to simplify a very confusing process for veterans, iava highly recommends congress utilize va's framework and avoid proposals that are one of or misinformed or put politics ahead of veterans. inefficiencies resulted in a need to consolidate care. we believe congress should be mindful of these lessons. our second concern centers around va's ability to effectively implement a plan to consolidate care across the enterprise that avoids many of the mistakes made in the implementation of choice and puts the veteran at the center of every discussion. during a recent discussion with post-9/11 veterans, there seems to be significant inconsistencies across va, and although i've had some good experiences, there are too many who have had bad experiences. they want to call all stakeholders to put the veterans first and change the culture of va across the country. given shortcomings on the implementation of choice and customer service generally, the va should also continue its efforts with my va and ensure employees are properly and consistently trained on any change in care. it

and again, we're talking about what congress can do or candidly what congress should have done years ago but refused to stand up to the gun lobby. so far in 2015, there had been 355 mass shootings. we are currently in the 336th day of the year. that means on average there has been more than one mass shooting per day. that statistic should stun us all and what is shocking to see that it has become normal and that's a very sad statement about this country. the common denominator of this is easy access to guns and that's no surprise given how many firearms there are in this country. in fact, more guns than people. the day after thanksgiving, black friday, the federal background check system ran more than 185,000 background checks. that's in one day of people seeking to buy a weapon. so that's at least 185,000 potential gun purchases. and the figures don't include purchases at gun shows or online. we sell many guns and so few checks. it's no surprise that guns fall into the wrong hands. the bill, i believe, that is going to be before the floor hopefully today is entitled denying firearms
