[laughter] david: there are many who believe that the cable business is reaching maturity. it grew through the 1990's. and even though it isn't falling apart, the growth potential is limited for it. ,nd for a company like disney what can you do to replace that growth? assuming that you need to replace it? robert: i think it is obvious that it is a business that is relatively mature. a multichannel television business. so you are not going to see growth in households that is anything close to what the business experience over the last decade or two decades. there are still some price increases that can and will be taken certainly by the best channels in my opinion. but it will not grow anything close. by the way, we continue to think we will see some growth. but it won't grow at the rate that we saw in the past. as a company, we are diversified. the investments we make in china are a great example. shanghai di

place. >> if you had a choice of having espn or not having espn do you think more than half the households in the u.s. would say i have to have it this? i think there's 30, 40 million ridiculously crazy sports fans but would you pay for espn for the entire year? you can subscribe just before football season. there is a continuity risk. >> let's talk about this. joining us is rich tull ochlo a larry haley is also with us today. rich, are you as concerned -- in other words, the concerns about like an espn outweigh the benefits of what they're getting from "star wars" right now? >> no, for a couple different reasons. first, i think what rich dramatically fails to appreciate is that, yes, maybe fewer people would subscribe to espn if it was unbundled, but they pay dramatically more. so an avid sports fan they pay, 8, 9, 10, $12 versus $6. second point, the proportion of revenues that disney has been deriving from its cable nets, including espn, has been declining relative to the studios. let's say worst-case scenario, which is not on the table, espn and the cable nets go down 3% this year, the

smaller bundles of content are easier do without espn. espn has looked for rates over distribution. so that an mvpd can say we'll distribute espn, like a comcast or charter, we'll distribute espn in only 80% of households versus other channels, the minimum might be -- >> minimum is 90% or more so they'll get less money overall. >> correct. >> as a result of cord shaving, fewer people can take that because they went for price as opposed to having it fully distributed among the subscriber base. >> absolutely. >> this environment, aren't the people who peel away at the beginning, aren't they most likely not to be the espn devot devotees? surely live sports is the most powerful thing in television as people peel away to watch content in different ways. that's why you see comcast bidding as it has been recently, our parent company, to be in the game as well. >> absolutely. >> as you move forward, the power inherent in what espn is, they could actually take greater subsidies, you could argue in the negotiation as everyone else panics to keep bundles together. no? >> look, from a "sportsce

when you look at disney and espn specifically, remember, the way espn works is they have sports. it's all sports all the time. if you're only a football fan, you're not going to subscribe for the full year. we saw that even with sling. people signed up for sling because you can get tbs and tnt and they got tbs to watch the pennant race and then they canceled sling. >> here's my question on it. i know it looks startling to see how many people have left the subscriber ranks, but i do feel like espn despite how much people pay for it right now, the hardcore addicts would pay two, three, four, five times as much so even if the numbers come down, can't they raise rates on the remaining subscribers and make up for the ground that they've lost? >> you lose the casual fan. when do you that, you don't get the stumble upon. how many people end up watching "monday night football" flipping through channels and not the super fan but they end up watching and they watch because it's on channel 28. >> espn still has enough. i'm not talking about over the top. i'm talking subscribers. can't they
