there are a lot of establishment people who love marco rubio, who want to put forward theories how marco rubio could become the nominee. explain given that map and that math, where does marco rubio win, even if he wins new hampshire? where else could he possibly win? >> i'm not trying to dodge the question, but all republicans don't know what his path is until after iowa or new hampshire. there is expectation if he gets the ticket out of iowa, he moves up to new hampshire. a lot of his fate depends on how long jeb bush wants to stick in this, whether chris christie outperforms in new hampshire. everything i mention is a momentum factor. the trey gowdy endorsement is another one of those. this is somebody who famously and proudly does not get that involved in grassroots machine-building politics, but is behind rubio because his nomination makes the most sense from his perspective rebranding the republican party. rubio needs other people to punch each other out in order for him to fill that role. he is not filling it himself or building the kind of campaign that wins in alabama himself. >>

now, what's really interesting and important about this i think is how politically savvy marco rubio is being. the fact is ever since the republican debate the conversation has been dominated by basically hair-splitting about ted cruz's -- this one amendment ted cruz pushed in 2013 when the reality is that rubio has a way bigger immigration problem at least in this primary than cruz possibly does. but rubio and his team have very effectively shifted the focus to cruz, a valid focus, and it's been quite effective for them and i think it's going to pay dividends for rubio going forward. >> the other weird dynamic that's playing out here, sam, is if there is one guy on the republican debate stage that republican establishment would like to see to be the nominee it's marco rubio, who is a sitting senator. if there's one guy they don't want to see other than donald trump it's ted cruz. and now you have an interesting sort of quiet coalescing around rubio, but there is the tacit acknowledgment that nobody can come out and say outright deeply critical things of ted cruz precisely because he

marco rubio let's talk about marco rubio. how long can he wait to win? >> what is his pathway? it's a big question you've heard from donors in states like iowa and new hampshire and south carolina. what is the map going forward? i think one of the most interesting things happening is marco rubio locked up the biggest prominent donors you can get. he's telling them something about the pathway forward. if you look at the polling and look where delegates are coming from there's no clear pathway forward. it stay under the radar and when people hear his personal story they'll come to him. if you finish in the top two or three in iowa or new hampshire you can maybe parlay that into sticking going forward. that said again you talk to people on the ground in new hampshire and saying what is the strategy here? where does he go? there's a real chance he's not top two or three in new hampshire. >> very possible. one important fact to keep in mind. the modern history of the gop nominee process. no nominee has gotten the nomination in iowa or new hampshire. can rubio change history and go o
