a bit of a mess in new jersey. we have ed hughes live in chopper 4 over the scene of this overturned tractor trailer, which is causing a closure to two different places. you can see it's on its side. the accident actually was coming off route 3 westbound on the ramp to the eastern spur of the turnpike. that is shut down. but there's also a debris spril. looks like there might be fuel on the road. that's shutting down the ramp from 495 westbound. outbound lincoln tunnel to route 3. both of those ramps closed right now. delays are building out there on 495 as you make your way westbound. i'll continue to keep a close eye on this for you. this is a trouble spot. you'll not be able to get to route 3 from 495 right now. coming off route 3 to the eastern spur of the turnpike also shut down. central parkway, where we have an accident heading eastbound out by the kew gardens interchange if the right lane. you can see stop and go as you make your way through there. otherwise, the roads look good right now. if you're getting

you get north of i-80 in new jersey. that's where you see snowfall, and then even look a little higher inmanhattan with this light mix. we're at 43 right now. too warm for snow, and even if we get any precipitation, roadways are going to be wet in and around new york city. marginal temperatures near cold monticello. we have seen accumulations, same thing across northwest new jersey, 31 in andover and there are a few rain drops. this tool we use on the accu drop, steady snow coming down. sin value lake -- sylvan lake, and whites near patterson and north of caramel and headed away from fish kill into parts of northern fairfield, and snowfall across northwest new jersey in morris county and it looks like rain and a light mix into new york city and some not reaching the ground as you go into long island. one thing that's clear. this batch is coming through over the next hour. there's a distinct break before the squall line of snow showers with the cold front comes through this evening, and that's what we'll be tracking that

how are the people of new jersey doing today? >> we have no reported deaths here in new jersey. thank goodness. our folks worked incredibly hard to keep people safe. we only had to shelter 113 people in public shelters last night. those were in cape may, atlantic, and cumberland counties. and so our folks listened to the warnings. they stayed in. we were prepared. we had 3800 pieces of equipment on the roadways. all of new jersey roadways are open this morning. new jersey transit, buses, and light rail will be ready by noon today. later this afternoon new jersey transit will be back up and running. so when we get to the morning rush tomorrow morning we'll be ready to go with no problem at all. this has been a model response. as i said yesterday, this is my 17th snow emergency in six years. we know how to do this. it went very well yesterday. >> what do people in your state need to know about sunday and then returning to work and school maybe monday? >> well, on sunday, jake, what people should do is, again, it's very cold out. people are going to want to start to go outside and

over northern new jersey and new york city. there's also a computer model that's been screening all week that new york city could get up to 3 feet of snow. and that almost blasted up last not the most reliable of models. that's my thinking right now. it's just this little shift in bands that we gusting at 45 by daybreak. already blizzard conditions as we go through the day. on the jersey shore we could see gusts of 60 or 70 miles per hour. we have the heaviest snow in the afternoon and then things start to taper off. tremendous moisture being vacuumed down the storm. and heavy moisture. we see heavy snow. that puts down snow very quickly one right over i80 and that's what i saw in lucy's live shot. light snow starting to break out. see it's having a tough time everyone in the -- even in the hudson valley. hour by hour, obviously the snow moving in now. accumulating a little faster. in the wee hours in the morning. but heavy banding and really stacking up. this is really confirming what i was just talking about. look at the dark

later tonight, extreme southern new jersey. early saturday morning, meaning the snow gets closer to the city into central new jersey. through the morning, and into the afternoon it moves into portions of connecticut and into the hudson valley. it's going to take a slow haul up towards the north and northeast as we go through time. again, like i said, a sharp cutoff to the north and west as to how much snow we get. here come the clouds today. we're still dry. here's the leading edge of the snow just making it to d.c. watch that line. it moves more east than north. eventually, it makes that turn towards the north. this is 3:00 a.m. light snow breaking out in the city. still not snowing in connecticut and the hudson valley. snowing pretty steadily from middle middlesex county on south at that point. then those bands of darker blue you see come on through, that's during the day tomorrow. the snow could fall heavy at times. it does push up into connecticut and the hudson valley, but the heir heavier bands across long island. this is

you can see the snow totals in new jersey. they were the highest just to the west. we saw snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour. morris plains, 33 inches of snow. roselle park, 27.5. well over two feet in metuchen. madison, 29 inches of snow you have to deal with. howell, 25.6 inches of snow. again, different as you head to the westchester/rockland region. southern westchester, you had those blockbuster totals in yonkers, 20.5 inches. pelham, closer to a foot. of course, the windchill still on the chilly side. still cold. feels like 20 in oakland now. feels like 16 degrees in newark. they were below zero in monticello. now it's a little better. as you plan the rest of your day, sunshine and clouds. maybe a few clouds through the afternoon. otherwise, it is a quiet day. no more rain and no more snow. temperatures are in the mid-30s. we start that melting process. back to the coastal flooding. the concern is until noon now. any flooding that we get will be minor to moderate. nothing like what we saw yesterday. the flood warnings still in effect for the next hour an

we're live in belmar, new jersey, this morning. i'm ray villeda. >> thank you, ray. >> two of the storm-related deaths in our area were out of long island. >> that's where we find "today in new york's" pei-sze cheng. >> reporter: it's a sad story. it was a 94-year-old man found dead next to his snow blower. still trying to find out more asht how that happened. here in smithtown, they got nearly two feet of snow. you can see from this parking lot, you know, the plows did try to do their best to clear this roadway, but at some point they just abandoned their efforts and tried to start up again once the snow stopped. trucks coming in. really, we've seen a lot of traffic. for having a travel ban, we've seen a lot of cars out driving now, especially because the roads are fairly well plowed. take a look at this car over here that was clearly abandoned overnight. they thought better of it for driving because the blizzard was so bad at some point. but the good things is we haven't seen a lot of abandoned cars on the l.i.e. or the main road

that rain/snow line has moved into new jersey and sussex county. not all of new jersey. keep our eye on the line very closely. that will be impacting snow totals. noon tomorrow, this is when the storm will be at its height with the wind. wind speeds could be near 60, 70 miles an hour along the shore. we will see snow continues by 5:00 p.m. some areas could see a break. we expect another burst of snow later on tomorrow evening. by 10:00 p.m., we should start to see this clearing out of the area. clearing even more as we go into your sunday. here is the look at the totals once this entire thing is out of here, which isn't until late, late saturday night. we expect up to 23 inches through parts of the area. 12 through 17 flewthrough a goo portion of the area. almost everyone will see a foot of snow. there you see the higher amounts. some areas will see more. we will talk more closely about other counties around the area coming up. >> local transit agencies feeling the impact even as the storm is getting started. >> starting with septa beginning tomorrow morning at 4:00, all

new jersey deaths amother and her 1-year-old son. felix was digging out the family's car last night. his wife sasha and their two young children decided to sit in the car to warm up. but the car's exhaust pipe as you see there was blocked by snow. so when the car was started, the inside filled up with carbon monoxide. sasha and their son messiah died. 3-year-old daughter is in the hospital fighting for her life tonight. the rest of the family, of course, is distraught. >> i didn't sleep yet. thinking about that. real bad. >> a woman who tried to revive little messiah says even the first responders were brought to tears. >> among the deaths on long island was 94-year-old charles watson. watson found outside of his home near a snow blower. his neighbor administered cpr and tried to revive him but to no avail. the army veteran who survived world war ii sue ccumbed to the blizzard. his son said he was extremely active and almost always plowed his drive way. >> he would go out and liked to do a little bit so i would let him go out and mak
