john: let's ask about ted cruz. what we know about ted cruz? he is doing well with groups that any candidate would want to have. the people who most reliably show up on caucus night. people who've done this before and they know the drill. seniors. people who are very conservative. that is a group who tends to be the hardest core of the hard-core. he's doing well in the fourth district. is a district where turnout is always higher than you would expect just based on population. it is a very republican district. he turned people out. the same is true of evangelicals. you look at their polling numbers and you think about is the proportion that will be there. he more evangelicals show up. ted cruz has a 20 point advantage. that is nice to have. mark: we did a deeper dive on ted cruz. we asked a lot of questions about his background and his campaign style. what did we find out they are? you have people who really like him because he agitates and angers people in congress. he has taken such a strong stance on immigration. thee things contrast with fa

questions donald trump has just raised about ted cruz' citizenship and ted cruz' response. what do you make of it? >> i think what ted is doing is turning the other political cheek. he is not taking the bait and not getting into an argument with donald trump. the two of them have kind of had an unwritten truce through this whole process. they benefited from it. both of them together dominate the polling. 60% voters support them. the reason is because they refused to be restrained by the chains of political correctness. now i think ted cruz in iowa is beginning to make one of those nascar moves. he's been there neck and neck with donald trump. he does connect with voters through his evangelical roots. i think that's what he is doing in iowa. i think it's to the benefit of donald trump for both of them to not attack one another. they share a very common base. >> as someone who is a supporter, endorsed donald trump, do you like that he is raising these questions about ted cruz? >> well, i believe he's answering the question, i don't know if he is raising the birther issue has

ted cruz was born in canada. a lot of people watching the debate said ted cruz got the better end of that discussion with donald trump. is that your view, andy? do you think this is asked and answered, done as an issue? >> i think the fact we keep talking about it seven days in, ten days in now shows there is something here and a lawsuit filed this week against ted cruz in which this issue is going to go potentially to the supreme court and there is a cloud hanging over ted cruz' head. look, the guy was born in calgary, canada and the idea this is subtle law is correct. we can go so far back to the 1975 naturalization act which i think the supreme court will look at to show ted cruz is not qualified to be president more over 25% of republican voters think this is a very serious issue which potentially disqualifies ted cruz, so i honestly just feel bad for steve king here who has put all of his hopes in ted cruz when this guy may not be -- >> not if i get time to rebut, you don't. >> you have that time, go for it.

ted cruz is ahead. he's at 25% to donald trump's 22% and maggie, of course, the question is, can he turn out people -- can trump or cruz turn out people to caucus? it's what they call the ground game. here's some reporting from your newspaper, "the new york times." it says one volunteer leader enlisted by donald trump to turn out iowa voter has yet to knock on a single door or make a phone call. another is a 9/11 truther with a website claiming that the 9/11 attacks were a government conspiracy. what do we know about his ground game? >> the beliefs of the people who should be door knocking are less than whether they're door knocking at all. tripp gabriel has come up with issues, several said later they never heard from the campaign. that is a problem. one of the ways you do -- there's two issues with getting out the vote, persuasion. trump has done pretty well with that argument. get out the vote is not what take place on the day of the caucuses. >> this is experience. this is where experience comes in.
