what we're learning is that donald trump reached out to chris christie as soon as christie dropped out of this race and tried to get his endorsement. this is significant because christie is the establishment republican to back donald trump and he undercuts the argument we're hearing from marco rubio that he is the establishment favorite. that he has the best chance of taking on secretary clinton in a general election. the timing significant. think back to the debate. marco rubio hammering donald trump for the first time really ever and he got the upper hand a lot of people thought. this endorsement turns the page on what was a rocky night for donald trump. we know that there is a personal component. the relationship between chris christie, donald trump goes back decades, new york, new jersey, they have worked together before. so, that played a role we are told in christie's decision to endorse. but you can't undercut how significant this is, this is again the first establishment figure to endorse donald trump. it could add legitimacy to his campaign that he was lacking before that. jim

it is fought working for christie. they are given you a similar message in terms of being willing to work across the aisle. to having a more moderate approach that is attractive to new hampshire voters being good at governance, they have dig barack barack, don't spend all their time doing that, on the substance, they're similar. on the sometime, kasich is incredibly engaged one on one with people in a way that engages them not only with whatever it is he is saying, whatever it is they are saying. he responds to them individually. he is personable. he seems grouchy in a likable way the same way christie is likable. he gets asked questions and does speeches thereafter, literally speech length rifts on whatever he thinks is either important, funny or important about the point. the lack of engagement from christie, him performing while the audience isn't getting it was a surprise to me. i don't know if it just doesn't work in new hampshire and it works at home or if it's seeing him next to kasich. that was a surprise. one

did it make chris christie look mean? >> that's chris christie, you know him. he's from new jersey, a prosecutor. he's very direct. you either really like him or you don't. he's very direct, and i wasn't bothered at all. i'm direct, say what i feel. sometimes it gets you in trouble. he needs to shine. i thought the governors were very solid. to that, probably kasich, christie, bush, in that order. but i think they did well and better probably than the other candidates. i thought trump did -- didn't hurt himself at all. he was very reserved and kind of more dignified and presidential throughout most of the debate. and i thought ben carson with cruz, if in fact it was any one of the other candidates, it would have ripped cruz's throat out for what he did in iowa. the reason trump brought that up is he wants to remind people in new hampshire and south carolina that in fact he's just a politician. he's just like those washington people he's criticizing, lose the drirty tricks. >> and i think most people assume, maybe incorrectly, that cruz is not making a serious p

this christie endorsement, timing and symbolism are big with endorsements. a lot of times they are overrated but the timing of it was brilliant. you have to say that. it shows you that this is a very sophisticated campaign that trump had. had this in his big of tricks ready to go when he needed it and the symbolism. he's -- chris christie is a card-carrying member of the republican establishment. if you believe there's five stages of grief going on, lester, the fifth stage is acceptance with republicans. christie is a big acceptor. >> republicans sulking out the headlines but lest we forget democrat voters in the south carolina primary tomorrow. what do we look for there? >> well, it should be a big win for hillary clinton. if it's not, it shows you that there is life in sanders' campaign. sanders needs to improve with african-american voters, and if he does that, we'll know because he'll come within single digits of her, but if it's a double-digit big win for her is could be a foreshadowing of a long night for bernie sanders on super

chris christie figured it out. the first thing i thought was that in two debates ago i thought if governor christie says one more time what it takes to be a governor then a senator, so, i mean, everybody has done it, but, yes, that was an important moment for christie. i don't think it was fatal for marco rubio. and i have to say, i think christie did himself a disservice with his tone and demeanor in the aftermath of it. instead of being a gracious winner, he just wants to, like, rub it in and pound marco rubio's head into it. in the meantime, your interview with marco rubio, he's surrounded by fans. now, i know chris christie couldn't have fans here, but i think it showed that it's not going to be fatal for marco rubio, but it certainly dinged him a bit. >> two ahead, mark. >> it's interesting, marco rubio should have taken a different -- made the same point with different language. >> different words. >> different words. >> as a speechwriter, you know. >> absolutely. i mean, you know, the reality is, he was maki
