let's go to chuck todd. what do you make of this? >> let me show you something inside the exit polls that show the dominance of hillary clinton. it's among the breakdown by race. a majority of the electorate, over 60% is african-american. she won 84% of african-americans. despite losing the white vote, as she has been doing to bernie sanders throughout the early states, when you have a lot more african-american vote, it makes a huge difference for her. this could foreshadow a big night for her super tuesday. half the states being contested super tuesday have electorates that are anywhere from 30% to 50% -- over 50% non-white. this could be the beginning of a march to the nomination for hillary clinton if tuesday looks anything like tonight. >> chuck todd, thanks. more on tonight's south carolina results on nbcnews.com. nbc news projects hillary clinton is the overwhelming winner in the south carolina primary. i'm lester holt, nbc news. >>> on this saturday night, southern showdown. hillary clinton expecting a big boost. bernie sander

joining us from new hampshire is moderator "meet the press" chuck todd. good morning, chuck. >> good morning, rosemary. >> chuck, let's talk about the republicans and their debate last night. it and at least early on that new jersey governor chris christie and others were out to get senator marco rubio coming into new hampshire from iowa. is last night's going to make a difference going into tuesday? >> look, i think it's possible. i think the election here is so glued, new hampshire voters have a history of showing they are willing to change their mind at the last minute, who they support 10 days before the primary can change and who they support on primary today. what was really perplexing boult marco rubio's performance last night, the fact he seemed unprepared for the attack. all he had to do was pick up a newspaper or watch cable news, because chris christie, the attacks that he made at the debate, he's been making for two or three days. he was telegraphing these attacks and rubio seemed unprepared for it. i think that's what makes rubio performance

let's bring in our political director, the moderator of "meet the press," chuck todd. chuck, if trump does well tomorrow, what are the points in which they can -- other republicans can stop him? >> the only way they can stop him within the party is to deny him the delegates he needs to get the nomination. to do that, he does well tomorrow night, then it becomes imperative that they defeat trump in march 15 in ohio meaning every other candidate other than john kasich decides to campaign there. maybe rubio says i'll let kasich go there and rubio has to win his home state of florida and maybe they find somebody else to rally around and beat him in illinois and north carolina. that's the only way they can do it within the party, but if they don't succeed by march 15th, there's nothing they can do, can't deny the nomination so then it's the third-party route. i've heard rumors of finding a candidate, mitt romney's name. there's a constitution party out there that has ballot access. if they want to start have to do it within the next couple of weeks to actually get ballot ac

chuck todd was pressing hillary clinton about that. and she said she could 100% guarantee this is not going to cause an implosion in her campaign. i guess i have a version of the same question which is, of course this is a story. but has it reached a point where the media seems to be pushing this beyond the extent that voters care about, particularly democratic voters? >> first of all, there are still revelations coming out about the e-mails. in the last week we've had new information about the extent of the issues here. and second of all, she gets asked about this. and democratic voters bring it up. here she's been asked about it. i spoke to democratic voters at her events. people support her who say i'm nervous about. this i still worry that this is a ticking time bomb for her candidacy. so this is not the kind of thing that democratic voters are on the fence about saying we don't care, we wish the media would move past it. no, what you hear from them is that they are worried about it. >> for the political reasons. >> they don't want

let's turn now to chuck todd, our political director and moderator of "meet the press." chuck, you've got bill clinton personal with voters, rubio's debate performance. are we seeing anything late in the game that's dramatically shifting the dynamic? >> reporter: i think what's amazing is how jumbled everything is on the republican side, and new hampshire is no longer going to serve of as the state we thought it would. we thought it was going to be the state that would winnow this republican field. i think now because of the rubio debate performance, even if he does still finish second, his opponents all believe he has a glass jaw and want another crack at him in south carolina. let's not lose sight of this fact, lester. both bernie sanders and donald trump, have been leading in the polls here for months. they have not lost their lead. maybe it goes up and down, and the fact of the matter is when the country is upset, new hampshire is the first one to tell us and a sanders/trump duel victory will tell us and send us just that message. that's still a big deal, lester. >>

"meet the press" moderator chuck todd interviews three candidates on the show this morning. before we get to the republican debate last night let's talk about the democrats. you're going to be talking and hosting the first and only head to head debate, you actually did that last week, chuck todd, you did that las week and you spoke with hillary clinton and bernie sanders last week. do you think the debate improved either of their chances in new hampshire or across the nation? >> well, look, i think what you saw is you saw what's going to be the framework for what's probably going to be a much longer primary fight than any democratic activist ever saw coming. hillary clinton cleared now is allowing bernie sanders to get she went at him pretty hard in the debate that i hosted last thursday night and i think she's looking at trying to play the long game here. look, both campaigns felt good about the debate, ironically enough, sharon. the sanders campaign loved the first pa of the debate that was all about wall street, defining who was a progressive, but the second part of the d

todd. chuck, our new poll asked registered voters which of the following would be their reaction to trump as the nominee. 51% said scared, 24% said angry, and when you look at numbers like that and you look at that back and forth we just saw a moment ago, what do you make of it? >> i have to say, it feels like every time we think public discourse has deteriorated to a new low we reach a new low. it's really stunning the back and forth today that we've seen between trump and rubio. it is unpresidential doesn't even begin to describe it, but, look the fact of the matter is you've got to give the trump campaign credit here. this christie endorsement, timing and symbolism are big with endorsements. a lot of times they are overrated but the timing of it was brilliant. it shows you that this is a very sophisticated campaign that trump had. had this in his big of tricks ready to go when he needed it and the symbolism. he's -- chris christie is a card-carrying member of the republican establishment

and maybe chuck todd. the one and only chuck todd joins us now from des moines. chuck, you're god's wing man when it comes to predicting the outcome of this. hope that's not intimidating. >> very intimidating. the lutherans are very good people. i hope they're okay with the fact that i happen to be jewish. but we all have the same god on that front. hey, one thing i would just say, i think as we're watching this night, the two political parties and their leadership, they're staring into the abyss tonight, guys. there is a chance that trump and sanders, if they both win, then the democratic party is going to see somebody who's not even a registered member of it, essentially win the first battle in an attempt to take it over. and trump is a guy who hasn't voted in a republican primary since the '80s. and he'll win -- could win the first battle in taking it over. this is a political earthquake that i think we're all sitting here gaming out iowa scenarios, new hampshire scenarios, this is an earthquake that would be taking place. sanders beating clinton, trump upendi

let's bring in nbc's chuck todd. did you ever think we'd see a new hampshire primary with donald trump and bernie sanders emerging as the winners? >> it's unbelievable, and, you know, look, we've been going through 12 years of frustration in the american electorate. so perhaps this is the ultimate outcome. two political outsiders dominating things. a couple of things in the exit polls that jumped out at me. among republican primary voters, basically the republican voters are split on the issue, do you want an outsider, a president from outside the establishment or one with political experience. divided right now, 48%, 47%. donald trump dominated among those who wanted an outside the establishment president with 57%. among those who wanted somebody with political experience, trump only got 6% of those voters, bush, kasich and rubio collectively got nearly 75%. this is why if there is a consolidation among one candidate not named trump on the outside, trump could find himself in a tough race. on the democratic side, i

. >>> let's bring in the moderate irofor of "meet the press" chuck todd. what do you see, chuck? >> let's start with nevada. show you how clinton pulled this off. when you look at it. let me show you among age. once again, we see the divide. younger voters going clinton. but she did better, believe it or not, among younger voters than previous ones. then there was the white to non-white split. a more diverse state. just over 40% of of the vote is non-white. among the non-white vote, that is where clinton had an advantage. she had a big advantage among african-americans. there's a question in the poll about hispanics. that's why we are careful there. wasn't to highlight one big number, because this is the establishment striking back on behalf of clinton. it's labor unions. clinton beat sanders by ten points among union households. that is everything you need to know about the casino workers that we showed there with chriskristin welker. let's shift to south carolina. polls will close there very soon. i just want to show you the makeup of the state. as you can see, it's somewhat co

maybe history is truly repeating it self. >> chuck todd, thank you. side fresh off her landslide victory over south carolina hillary clinton is look ahead to super tuesday as an opportunity to pull away in this race. nbc's kristen welker is with the clinton campaign in virginia. kristen kristen, what can you >> reporter: lester, good evening. officials say they feel confident heeding into super tuesday after that big win in south carolina, fueled largely by support. clinton hoping to build on that tomorrow. senator sanders vowing not to give up, but he does have a steep climb, particularly if you look at the numbers, lester. the official nbc news delegate count shows clinton with 519 delegates and sanders with 86. if you only take into account super delegates, typically party leaders who get to choose who they will support, clinton gets 428 to sanders 21, a 20-field advantage. clinton is up with ads in all of the super tuesday states and sanders with ads in less diverse states like colorado and massachusetts. still, sanders has a lot of cash on hand w

joining us now, chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press." what can you think will be the big surprise? chuck: there will be a couple. one is donald trump. every private polo, public polls have been showing it. but the pope's spat with him on immigration -- i talked to the other campaigns, they are petrified of it for this region. they think it helps trump, that it stopped his slide. why? it put him back on message, talking about immigration. the history of this campaign has been anytime trumpet talk about immigration, no matter how controversial it has been, it has solidified his support with his base. it may have angered him down in first place. we are in a battle for second. the pressure is on marco rubio. he has every major endorsement in south carolina short of lindsey graham and the late strong cement. it's not good enough for second-place, he's throwing it all on the line. he's hoping to surpass cruz that make this a three-person race. if he doesn't, this becomes trump versus cruz quickly. nigel: let's talk about the evangelical vote.
