over to john king. taking a closer look. john, she is maintaining a very, very slight lead. it's a lot closer than it would have been a couple months ago. >> this was supposed to be the first act of what the clinton campaign a fire wall. you get the states like nevada, next south carolina, where you have a significant african-american population, significant latino population. that was supposed to be the clinton fire wall. we're shy of 20%, this is a dead heat. 50-49. the winner here if it ends up like this no matter who is on top the delegates split evenly. how is she maintaining the lead, the reason she is slightly ahead because of a significant lead at the moment in clark county. more than 7 in 10 live in clark county, las vegas and the suburbs, the major population center. 13% of the vote counted there. she maintains a lead, now if the margin stays the same, absolutely zero guarantee of that, but if she's run up this margin of 13%, stays significantly ahead the state numbers will stretch out if she continues to have such a big lead because of the population center. the r

john king is back with a breakdown by the numbers. south carolina a pivotal moment for barack obama and then senator clinton when she was running. how does it look for her this time? >> it could be a huge day as she tries to get the momentum back. this map is the national african-american population. the deeper the color, the bigger percentage. new hampshire, hardly any. mostly white state. now out to nevada first, latinos and some african-americans. then south carolina. tells you everything you need to know. significant african-american population. in the 2008 democratic primary, 55%, a majority of the votes of the democrats are likely to be african-american. in 2008, president obama won nearly 8 in 10 of those. it was game over. an african-american candidate winning a huge slice. hillary clinton ran second to john edward and obama third there. now hillary clinton versus bernie sanders. can bernie sanders make inroads in time? that vote coming up in the next two weeks. can he make inroads to narrow her lead. this is what headquarter

and our "inside politics" anchor, john king. john, when president obama engages donald trump even if it's to say something negative about him, does that help trump in a way or at least elevate him in the minds of republican voters? >> sure, it elevates him with republican voters and mr. trump at a town hall right after mentioned the president's criticism and said he took it as a badge of honor, took it as a compliment. remember when trump said he'd ban muslims coming into the united states. president obama came out and criticized him, hillary clinton came out to criticize him. trump is also in a direct debate with the president of the united states. and he's a few days away from a primary in south carolina and he's happy for that debate. >> gloria, is it possible that president obama's underestimating just how much donald trump has connected with certainly the conservative electorate? >> you know, i think president obama knows how to read polls, and he understands how well donald trump is doing. i'm here in south carolina. he's

who has strength and who is underperforming. >> john king thank you very much. i want to bring in our panel. you know, it's interesting we hear so much about ground game. do we know much about whose ground game on the gop side truly is the best? >> you hear a lot about how good ted cruz's is. ted has built this from the ground up. he's from texas. it's too big of a state. there's two different time zones and 19 media markets but he has adopted to the person to person and frankly church to church campaigning that's so important. >> particularly reaching out to pastors. >> absolutely. >> his senate race, he won his senate race doing this kind of thing. he was by far -- he was by far the underdog in that primary race and he came from behind and won. >> and all the tech people who are -- the data geeks are really impressed with ted cruz on that. that he's the more data driven of all the republican candidates. we're going to see if that tech enabled ground game can deal with the air force. you've got basically a major air war being launched by trump. >> it is interes

john king joins us with how the delegate count looks right now. where do the democrats stand? >> almost a tie. hillary clinton 52. bernie sanders at 51 in pledged delegates. they decided in the contest so far. hillary clinton has 445 super delegates. i'm going to go ahead and say she wins south carolina by 60/40. that's on saturday. that would put her ahead at 84. now we map out super tuesday. let's bring up the super tuesday states. this gives them all to clinton. bernie sanders, we assume he'll win his home state of vermont he also thinks he can compete in minnesota. for the sake of argument let's give him minnesota. he thinks he's competitive in colorado. let's give him colorado. and he thinks he can win oklahoma. let's also flip that. if we give sanders those states and clinton the rest, the winner 60% and challenger 40%. you see her start to pull ahead and 445 more super delegates pledged to her. if you map this out through the end of march, this is where the clinton campaign thinks unless they can start getting african-american votes, that she starts to pull away. she st

let's go over to john king over here at the magic wall. almost all of the votes are now in, you know. he's got what, 75,000 more votes than marco rubio and ted cruz. >> the map speaks for itself. this is a thumping by donald trump, winning everywhere. winning up here, upstate in the evangelical heartland of south carolina, winning most of the area you see marco rubio winning in the charleston area, but winning most of the area along the coast where you have retirees, military installations, transplants here. winning center of the state, except richland county is the center of the state, but even running competitive there. even where trump comes in second, he runs reasonably competitive and picks up votes, so very impressive win for trump. we're at 99%. the question, this will be a minor thing. the question will be for a moral victory, perhaps, but marco rubio at the moment in second place, ted cruz in third place with 99% of the vote in. can cruz pass rubio? again, it will be essentially a tie anyway, but a little bit of a moral boost, may

let's go back to john king over here at the magic wall. you're looking first of all at the republican side. 9% of the numbers in. we're getting a feeling of how trump did it. >> how trump did it. number one, you look at that, dnald trump never ran for office before. second contest in the new hampshire primary, he's going to get a win. his margin is going to be a healthy win. donald trump will go to south carolina with a bit of steam. ted cruz will be waiting there with his iowa win. who else breaks out from the establishment? kasich running a good second right now. we'll see if it holds up. we're still shy of 10% of the vote. this gets fascinating, wolf, when you look at this. number one, donald trump's doing it because he's winning by pretty good margins. concord here, drop down to man chester chester, blue collar workers. he's winning in the center of the state. the two largest cities. he's winning on the seacoast, portsmouth. it's a closer race here, these are much more moderate voters. with so many establishment candidates splintering

let's bring in john king. >> let's show we'll bring up the national african-american population. the deeper the color, the higher percentage of african-americans. not many african-americans. we had the vote up in new hampshire, not many african-americans. the democrats first nevada and then they come to south carolina. it is obvious. you can see it. a much higher african-american population means the democrats are courting their traditional base. this is 2008 when you had the clinton and john edwards base. 43% of the vote was white. and then senator obama was third, but 55% of the vote was african-american, senator obama getting most of those rest. john edwards campaign was in trouble at this point. they were standing in milwaukee, they were talking to voters in nevada. on the civil rights issues and justice issues. without obama in the race, they think that is the constituency. bill clinton cleaned up. 77% of it. they're hope in the clinton campaign is they get that vote this time. you could see senator sanders trying to intensify his pitch. he is late to the game. he is from ve

john king joins the table here of our analyst table. john, as you look forward to this next week, we have the cnn debate in houston, that's obviously now important for rubio and cruz, but a lot could be decided -- is it possible -- donald trump hinted maybe this thing isn't going to last all that much longer. >> well, it will last a while longer, but the debate becomes huge. the question is how do the people calculate their chess game. you would think they would want to take out mr. trump because they have such a short time to do it, if you look at them now the only one you would say donald trump won't win is maybe texas, although we'll see if the momentum out of this gives trump an edge in texas as well. even there if he comes in second he still gets delegates because we're in the early stage, so you would think they would go after tru trump, but you have cruz and rubio fighting to take on trump, but at some point you have kasich, rubio and cruz pointing fingers and donald trump gave the victory speech. that will continue if everybody

let's check in with john king at at magic wall. i suppose you'll be able to tell me how donald trump pulled this off. >> can i ask you a question, do you remember who came in second in the daytona 500? never mind. let's look very early results so far and obviously clark county if you were with us the other day with the democrats it's more than 7 on -- 70% of the population, washington county in the western part of the state, trump at 34 there. it's the second largest county. if you look at the results this is the western part of the state. this is where you would expect ted cruz if he is getting your traditional evangelical voter, you would expect votes here, but right now it's filling in all donald trump. we watched this in south carolina and we saw it in new hampshire, 42, 23, 22 so like the other night it looks like this where we will be spending our time. they do get delegates. so second and third matters, you get one or two more delegates than the other guy, but this has to be a concern to those trying to stop donald trump. th

let's go to john king. when you take a step back, you go delegates, super delegates, really? she's got hundreds of super delegates, but only a few states have actually voted. explain. >> keep the 400-plus in a separate bank. hold them separate. she might need them. keep 400-plus and hold them. those are elected and appointed democrats who said they are for hillary clinton. they can change their mind. new hampshire, iowa, and nevada, here's where we are. let's assume she wins south carolina. i allocated the delegates on a 60% to a 40%. now let's move up to super tuesday. if hillary clinton wins all those states 60/40, she would start to move ahead. bernie sanders says he'll win his home state of vermont on super tuesday. no reason to doubt that. he says he'll win minnesota. we don't know if he will, but let's accept that and switch it there to a sanders state. he says he'll win colorado. the clinton people disagree, but this is a hypothetical. and he says he'll win oklahoma. at that point, it looks closish, but remember she has 400-plus super delegates. we move on through the

here's john king to explain. >> she just won nevada. south carolina next week at a 55-45 margin. she wins. let's assume she wins everything else. she wins super tuesday. 55-45. then she would start to pull away with delegates. let's assume throughout the month of march that hillary clinton won everything. now the sanders campaign thinks they're going to win. they think they're going to win vermont for example. let's assume 55-45 all through there. then may. continuing to win 55-45. then we finish out. if she won 55-45 all the way out, she would still be short of what she needs to clench the nomination if sanders stays in to the end because of the democratic party delegate rules but over 400 super delegates right now and more people that pledged to support her and keep it private now. if she wants to roll out endorsements. if she won everything 5-45 and bernie sanders may win some of these states. hillary clinton may win some by 65% but if you play it out like this it is conceivable she gets to the convention even if she won 49 states she could end up short of the delegates, the p

let's go straight now to our chief national correspondent john king, our political contributor, maggie haberman, anticipa and our political director david challian. you've been traveling the ground, traveling the state, talking to voters. those slams against marco rubio, sort of jaw drops. they are harsh. you've just heard he's been getting knocked by so many of his rivals. is this affecting his supporters or not? >> had to move it from the cafeteria to the gym because he has a bigger crowd. they think the bigger crowds are the sign he has momentum. some people think they can get close, if not, catch up to donald trump. they think he has momentum. they also know he's under attack, which makes saturday's debate incredibly critical for marco rubio. third place in iowa was good. but the rubio campaign knows he has to back it up here in new hampshire. what their hope is that he can convince voters who are torn between bush and rubio, turn between kasich and rubio, turn between trump and rubio. they're trying to convert those voters in the final days to get him a strong second to move on. >

john king, how do you read those numbers in terms of the debate seemed to have made an impact on a high number of republican voters? >> reflex tells you that if they processed like the news media did, that it was a bad night for rubio, that it might have halted his momentum. sometimes the voters are counter intuitive to what we think. but if so many people thought the debate was so important and clearly if you're watching the beginning of the debate was not a good night for marco rubio, but the first few exchanges with chris christie were bad, i can tell you he was moving. there was no question rubio was moving up heading into that debate. if that stopped it, that gets back to what we're talking about. one of the big questions will be what are the margins between rubio, kasich, bush, christie and where does cruz fit in there. >> and yet if you have so many republicans undecided up until just recently, a lot of the polls then really are called into question, are they not? >> exactly. look, this is a very unsettled republican race. it has been. you look at the size of the field and new ha

john king is outfront. you've got trump and cruz each with a win in their column, so how do they stack up in south carolina? >> we've got a heavyweight fight in south carolina. it's a state with a lot of ev evangelica evangelicals. it's a state with a vibrant tea party movement. you have a lot of blue collar people who will listen to donald trump when he talks about immigration, when he talks about bashing china, when he delivers the touch message on trade. the last polls we've seen, donald trump had about a 15-point lead above cruz. south carolina does sometimes have a history of sticking it to new hampshire. remember, john mccain had a big win there in 2000. george w. bush rolled in south carolina and got his bid back on track. there's good terrain for both of them. you see the nasty ads already because they understand, erin, whoever wins south carolina gets a bounce in all those southern states that come just down the road in a little bit. >> that huge super tuesday. after trump's big win last night, joh

i want to go over to john king at the magic wall. you've got more information john on how she did it how she -- she needed this win. she got the win an impressive win. a win is a win as we like to say. >> senator sanders say it's close. republicans are saying this proves she's weak. she's winning. that's what the clinton campaign will count on tonight. why is she winning? she's winning four points statewide. consistently she has been ahead in clark county more than 70% of the vote in this county. when we had 26% in she was up by 10 points, 50 brs, 10 points, now 71%, 10 points. this is where most of the votes are in the basket. she she's winning statewide. yes, there will be i debate heading into south carolina how did sanders get so close? why is this win so important? first let's pull to the national map. one win for sanders, two win for clinton. her support stays among the establishment. super delegates, if you're in the sanders camp this is a hypothetical. let's play this out. she just won nevada. this assigns her south carolina
