one part of maryland in the jackpot for snow was southern maryland and central vass. michelle: this is route 301 in brandywine not far from waldorf that also got plenty of snow. maryland bureau chief brad bell is in la plata. you were telling us earlier while you were getting there you saw wrecks on the roads. are things getting any better? brad: you know, it has been an interesting day. we did see a lot of wrecks. right now things are better. port tobacco road, the lane closest to me is wet pavement. the far lane is slush. now the snow has changed. this morning it was powdery. right now it's perfect snowman snow. it is really sticking. how much we got here, you can see on the ruler about five inches. now we have seen as much as seven. but the worst of the traffic conditions by far this morning. take a look at some of the video. you mentioned the crashes we saw. i actually witnessed a couple of them happening in front of me. cars spinning off of the road. cars spinning. there was a three-car collision in annapolis. one person a ramp and ended up on top of a snow bank.

she was a student at the university of maryland. police are also revealing what led up to that crash on travilah road. a 21-year-old driver was behind the wheel. news4's darcy spencer talks to police about whether charges will be filed. >> reporter: this mangled metal was once a dodge viper sports car. police say the young driver lost control on travilah road in potomac sunday afternoon and slammed into a concrete barrier. his passenger, 18-year-old christina koutsoukos later tied from her injuries. police say the driver charges. >> it could be a lot more serious than traffic charges. it depends what the nature of the investigation reveals, what the driver was doing at the time of the collision. >> reporter: the police are saying they believe that speed was a factor in this crash, but they're still trying to determine exactly how fast he was going. maria mckay was in her driveway when she witnessed the horrific crash. she called 911 and watched as rescuers worked for more than an hour to free koutsoukos from the wreckage. did you tr

chain of events started before noon at a panera bread in maryland. deputies responded to a call in the restaurant. we are standing by for a press conferen overnight shooting at the resten hospital center. investigators say a 53-year-old man what a self-inflicted gunshot wound drove up to the hospital about 1:30 this morning. they say he shot out the glass in the nonemergency door and fired the gun again when the hospital staff tried to help him. luckily no one was hit. security rushed to the hobby and convinced him to drop the weapon. that man is in stable condition and is treated at another hospital. leon: well, morning or night, rush hour has everybody knows, no fun along interstate 66. despite arlington county objections it looks like the two-lane highway is getting larger in the beltway. brianne carter has details on this. what is the story? brianne: >> this is a plan to widen 66 inside the beltway. the bipartisan agreement will add the tolls in 2017 and then widen it later. the ongoing debate to block the tolls altogether. not everyone is behind

alison: leon, two maryland deputies dead. after a shootout at a panera bread. it all happened in harford county, maryland, this afternoon. the suspect was also killed. jonathan with the developments on this story. jonathan: it was a heart-breaking and horrifying 15 minutes at a shopping center in abingdon. which is two hours north of baltimore. police say that 67-year-old david evans shot two deputies. the first deputy was shot at close range in the head. the second deputy also shot but he also had fired back which killed evans. the names of those two deputies have not yet been released. but clearly this is a difficult loss not just for the force but for the entire state. >> one of our deputies was a and served in the services division. the other deputy had served this agency for the last 16 years. and was assigned to the community services division. jonathan: maryland governor larry hogan released a statement tonight saying he is heartbroken and sends his sincere prayers. he ordered flags to be flope at half -- flown at half staff. what triggered this horrible
