megan mcgrath now with us. >> reporter: well, good morning. you can see behind me here the latest water main break that wssc is dealing with. we are on bonifant street. this broke overnight just prior to the intersection at georgia avenue. so it's closed at that intersection. fortunately the water is not gurgling from the ground, we don't have an impact to rush shower, but certainly some repair work is going to have to happen here at the top of this street here. now, this is the time of the year for water main breaks. fluctuations in temperatures. when the temperatures swing from cold to warm and back again, that just is not good for water main. it causes them to break, increases the risk of situations like this. this very area on sunday, we had another water main break. and now another problem this morning. university boulevard on sunday, a water main break there. that caused big problems during yesterday's rush hour. fortunately in that situation, all the rains will be open for are your hour, although they are going to close some of the lane

chopper 4 live over to the scene. >> megan mcgrath on the phone with us now. what are you seeing? >> reporter: we've just pulled over to the side. we basically got forced off the beltway on to 355. and i don't know if you can see this live picture i'm trying to send you here, but ramp where they are telling people they cannot get on the inner loop. and that is basically the situation all around this trouble spot, all of the ramps to both the inner and outer loops of the well wbeltway, the not letting anybody on to the beltway at this point. and actually getting off on to 355, i thought it would be jammed, but it's in pretty good shape surprisingly so given the number of cars forced off the beltway. we have a very serious accident involving a tractor trailer. it went on to its side on top of the jersey wall. some of the load spilled on both the inner and outer loops of the beltway. there is a fuel spill also associated with that which is a hazmat situation. so it will take them a while to clean that up. so it is just an absolute mess with both loops of the beltway closed at this in

meg megan mcgrath is live with more. >> reporter: good morning. it will be a couple of hours before crews come out and start to work on this particular break here on bonnie fapt street. if you take a look behind me, you can see the wssc crews are monitoring the situation. this is the top of bonifant just prior to the intersection with georgia avenue. you can see the crack in the pavement and some of the debris on the roadway. this is the same area where we had a water main break just a few days ago on sunday. they fixed that and now today another problem in the same general area. this is the season to water main breaks. fluctuations in temperatures to the good for those pipes. the expansion and contraction makes those pipes more susceptible to breaks. this video is from rush hour yesterday on university boulevard where we had a much larger water main break that really snarled traffic during rush hour. all those lanes thankfully open for this morning's rush hour, but we are see some lane closures on university later. sometime after 9:00 as they do

megan mcgrath has more. you have seen it all this morning. it was shut down, now we're back open. this is the outer loop of the beltway, finally, finally traffic is back to speed. this was after hours this morning of just standstill gridlock when both sides of the beltway, the inner loop and the outer loop were closed. closed for about 2 1/2 hours because of this tractor trailer accident. take a look at the video here. it was early this morning, just a bit before 5:00, this big rig was traveling down the outer loop of the beltway, lost control and flipped on its side. the cab of the truck separated, got caught up on to the jersey wall and went on to the other side of the beltway. so, you had a debris field that was on both sides of the highway. the inner and the outer loops were both closed. traffic came to an absolute standstill as they cleaned up this mess. there were a number of boxes inside the truck, they scattered all over the highway. it was a real mess. many folks t took them hours to get to work this morning. >> i'm sitting on 495 for over three hours. this is ridiculous.

megan mcgrath is live at the gallery place station now with how your ride might be different ca today. >> reporter: eun riders should expect to see increased police presence along the system and that will come in the form of additional metro transit officers on patrol as well as private security officers picking up certain tasks. the increase in security comes on the heels of several high profile crimes that have happened, including a shooting on a green line train this week swellings a recent attack at the gallery place station by a group of teenagers. now metro has hired a private security firm to patrol its rev new facility in alexandria. and to escort technicians who now, that will allow 17 metro transit officers to be reassigned to patrol duty. 11 will be reassigned immediately, six in 60 day. metro place will also use overtime to overlap day and evening shifts creating a greater police presence in the late afternoon and evening. also worth mentioning, metro officials are very supportive of a judge's recent decision to ban the teenagers involved in a recent fight on the red line.
