after iowa, good-bye, mike huckabee. poof. today it was slightly more surprising news when we learned that we would also get to poof rand paul. it's interesting rand paul quit today because rand paul is not actually doing terribly in the grand scheme of things, at least he wasn't before he quit today. he's not doing well, but he wasn't actively on fire like mike huckabee was. for example, in this new ppp poll that we just got tonight, this exclusive poll that we got, first national poll taken since the iowa caucuses, rand paul comes in in that poll at 5%. not good. but it ties him for fifth place with john kasich and jeb bush. puts him well ahead of chris christie and carly fiorina and they're not quitting. but rand paul is quitting. one other reason it's surprising that rand paul is quitting is that he didn't do that badly specifically in iowa. rand paul got about 4.5% of the vote in iowa. that was good enough for a solo fifth-place finish. his campaign had said ahead of iowa that a top-five finish is all they were aiming for

carly fiorina, and john kasich, mike huckabee and chris christie got 1%. cruz finished with eight delegates. rubio and trump with seven apiece. and ted cruz put his campaign into overdrive in the final hours before the caucuses. completing a tour of iowa's 99 counties. what is known in this state as the full grassley. along with the voter outreach operation that paid off. cruz won among voters who said they were contacted on behalf of a candidate. and those who had caucused before. it also found cruz captured influential voting blocks including 44% of self-described very conservative voters. 34% of evangelicals. 38% of those who say they wanted a candidate who shares their values. here's cruz thanking his supporters last night with some subtle digs at donald trump. >> tonight is a victory for the grass roots. to put in perspective, your incredible victory that you have won tonight. that is the most votes ever cast for any republican primary winner. tonight is a victory for millions of americans. who have shouldered the burden of seven years of washington d
