sandra bookman has the details tonight. >> reporter: liz, that teenage suspect has been here at the 6th precinct all day. he was arrested this morning in manhattan. police now say a crime stoppers tip led to the arrest of this suspected in the slashing attack on a restaurant worker nearly a week ago. questioned at the 6th precinct. at the diner where the assault happened, news of the arrest was welcome. >> i'm happy. i hope bobby gets justice. >> i hope they throw the back at the individual. >> reporter: on february 17th, a diner employee asked a panhandler hitting up customers for money to leave the restaurant. he did, but came back later and slashed the employee across the left cheek. the bound. investigators released video and photos in an effort to capture the suspect and finally this morning in manhattan. the teen was taken into custody. still, some say the attack on the worker and other recent slashings have left them concerned. >> i don't feel safe anymore, and if someone gets too close scared. >> reporter: today these words of assurance from the mayor. >> what has really grandmo

i'm joe torres. >> and i'm sandra bookman. we begin with the plane crash. the plane took off from pittsburgh, massachusetts, last night. it was headed to republic airport in farmingdale. a student pilot was at the controls when the plane started having engine trouble. he gave the controls to the flight instructor who made that emergency landing in the setauket harbor. >> rescuers saved three of the four passengers. here's eyewitness news reporter lucy yang. >> reporter: it was a valiant effort in the middle of the night in pitch blackness with victims in setauket harbor. >> you could hear the victims calling for help. so you know, you had to get out there. and took what we had. >> reporter: 11:00 saturday night, a piper 4 cedar plane from massachusetts made an emergency landing in the waters off setauket island. we're told there were four men on board. scene but their only guide above. >> as the helicopter continued to search, you would be talking to somebody 20 feet next to you, and all of a sudden the light moved and you couldn't see them. >> if it weren'

eyewitness news reporter sandra bookman is live at the restaurant with more. sandra? >> reporter: yeah, shirleen. that suspect right now in custody and being questioned at the sixth precinct. he is 16 years old. and we learned this afternoon that the arrest came as a result of tips that came through crimestoppers. as you said, the incident happened on february 17th here at the silver spurs diner in the village. they came into the restaurant, asking for donations from customers. a worker asked them to leave. the panhandler came back and treat. that worker, bobby bar doe, needed 137 stitches to close that wound. in the days that follow, police released video and pictures of the suspect and several other teenagers that were said to be with him. again, he was taken into custody this morning. customers here at the restaurant, they are happy to hear about that arrest. >> i'm relieved. because he might have done it to someone else. i'm happy. i hope bobby gets justice. >> well, i'm glad they caught the individual. and i hope they throw the book at him. >> again, that 16-year

. >> and i'm sandra bookman. we will begin with the massive crane collapse. crews are working to remove the final species of the crane from the streets in tribeca. once the pieces are cleared, the investigation into what exactly happened can get underway. >> stephon kin has the latest. seconds for the crane to come crashing down here, but getting it out of here will take so much longer because it had to be cut up into several dozen pieces to be hauled out of here, and it had to be done without compromising its integrity to be examined for clues. >> reporter: piece by piece, the collapsed crane is being hauled away to tribeca, taken to an undisclosed location so investigators can look at it, hoping it will show what happened here and why. the 565-foot steel structure carefully cut into 35 pieces, and the goal is to have it all removed by sunday morning. >> the main point is to cut them in locations that doesn't compromise the forensic engineering value. >> reporter: the computer's recorded movement has also been moved. the expectation it will contribute signif

sandra bookman is live in massapequa with the story. >> reporter: that's right, shirleen, a $5,000 reward is now being offered by the nassau county aspca. now, this is bandit. that is the temporary nickname given to this 5-month-old puppy, who was tossed out of a moving vehicle. it happened saturday night, along a residential street, about 7:45 in union dale here on long island. a neighbor saw that toss and now, we are told that bandit suffered no real injuries from being thrown from that vehicle. but animal rescue officials say that the puppy does show some signs of having been abused. >> we're fed up. as all animal people are. with these total callousness and disregard for life that people show. and the only chance we have of stopping this, that's why our organization is offering a $5,000 reward. >> reporter: now, the only description authorities are telling us they have of the vehicle, a dark, two-door sedan, with tinted glass windows. again, this happened 7:45 saturday evening, along a residential street in union dale. now, the aspca is hoping that the reward and seeing bandits report

. >> sandra bookman has the details. >> we're hearing from police tonight that they do have a suspect in this assault. and they say it is someone who has tried to pull this scam before. >> reporter: the assault on that tourist from arkansas happened late yesterday afternoon right here in front of the staten island ferry terminal. police say the man was punched in the face and knocked unconscious after he refused to buy tickets to the statue of liberty. tickets now believed to have been fake. the suspect and his female accomplice fled but were reportedly captured by surveillance cameras. investigators believe they now know who they're looking for and the mayor is promising the incident is being taken seriously. >> if there's something aimed at tourists or aimed at the staten island ferry, we will get at it very, very aggressively. we obviously deeply appreciate we have the highest number of tourists we've ever had last year, 58 million plus and we want to keep it that way. >> police say they do have a suspect. they will not guv us his identity. we can tell you it's a 25-year-old man sa

. >> eyewitness news reporter sandra bookman spoke to his family. she's in the parkchester section with the story. >> ataur rahman's family said he's only been a livery driver for two years. he said after this vicious attack, he's vowing never to get behind the wheel of a cab again. hospital photos and it is easy to understand ataur rahman's pain. the bangladeshi livery cab driver remains hospital after being severely beaten and robbed over the weekend. >> he's bad. he got 12 stitches on his lips and a fractured jaw. >> reporter: the ordeal began with a routine pickup near the castle hill section. he the two passengers near the intersection of east 100th and 72nd street and st. lawrence avenue and drove off, only to have to stop a few yards down the block to close an open backdoor. that's when he was jumped and hit in the face with a bottle. he says by the passengers who just had gotten out of his cab. >> he thought he would have died that time. somehow he got off and there were several people standing and looking at him. and nobody helped him. >> r
