a crane this size falling onto the street in the middle of tribeca. one person has been killed, several others hurt. the question,how did this happen? this massive crane was working on 60 hudson street moving air conditioners on and off the roof. if weighed more than 300 tons and all came crashing down this tribeca crushing cars and swiped at least four buildings on the way down. residents and workers said it was so loud, they thought it was a bomb or earthquake had hit. the wreckage lined several blocks because of the shear height of the equipment. a 38-year-old man from the upper west side sitting inside of a car unrelated to the work did not survive. others are being treated in the hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life- threatening. ironically enough, crews were in the process of putting the crane in a secure position because of high winds, and it was during that process when this crane collapsed for reasons that are still under investigation. the deadly accident did impact local streets, subways, and buses. as you said, it also

marcus solis joins us now from tribeca with more details. hi, marcus. >> reporter: we can tell you at full daylight, we're seeing more workers arriving surrounding the section of the crane that we can see from our vantage point, but of course, it will be quite some time before they get that all out of here. it was 8:00 yesterday morning. you with are down here when workers tried to bring that boom down and then it crashed down. 500 foot boom was coming down in a controlled manner and then it became a free fall and crashed down onto worth street. the 4,000 pound ball called the headache ball landed in the office of new york law school. one person killed, three others injured. there was the billing emergency response that shut down streets in the area. as we said, the big question remains what caused that crane to topple over? >> it's the capacity of 330 tons so it is a very, very large crane. perfectly fine in terms of the way it was engineered, but obviously, it requires an investigation as to why this happened. 38-year-old david wicks was k

crews are working to remove the final species of the crane from the streets in tribeca. once the pieces are cleared, the investigation into what exactly happened can get underway. >> stephon kin has the latest. seconds for the crane to come crashing down here, but getting it out of here will take so much longer because it had to be cut up into several dozen pieces to be hauled out of here, and it had to be done without compromising its integrity to be examined for clues. >> reporter: piece by piece, the collapsed crane is being hauled away to tribeca, taken to an undisclosed location so investigators can look at it, hoping it will show what happened here and why. the 565-foot steel structure carefully cut into 35 pieces, and the goal is to have it all removed by sunday morning. >> the main point is to cut them in locations that doesn't compromise the forensic engineering value. >> reporter: the computer's recorded movement has also been moved. the expectation it will contribute significant information to the inspectors, but it may only provide basic insight. >> i don't w

dray clark is live now in tribeca. dray? >> reporter: good morning, lori. the area behind me looks different than it did on friday when the accident happened. there are now sidewalk sheds on either side of the block. you can see the large crane is gone. it was removed over the weekends, broken up into 35 different parts and then taken to an undisclosed location. there will be thorough inspection of the crane and an extensive investigation into how that crane collapsed and buckled. meanwhile, still repair work being done here at the scene. into the night, there was still water pooling on west broadway. the water coming from the water main cracked open by friday's crane collapse. crews expect to have most of the area re-opened this morning. but at least two blocks remain days. that's while they finish work lines. the crane has been removed, but the city isn't waiting for the investigation. that will take weeks, maybe months, to be completed. the mayor is making changes already to how cranes operate in the city. the first priority, had he says, is pedestrian s
