learn more about anaheim all weekend here on american history tv. >> we are inside the anaheim heritage center. we were established back in 1967. we are going to talk about anaheim in the 1920's, one specific period of time where anaheim became known as klana heim because of the ku klux klan and its presence in the county but particularly in anaheim. anaheim in the 1920's was a .mall, rural community are our economy is based on agriculture. we are post-world war i, so there had been a very listed patriotic -- a very nationalistic, patriotic response to the war. so there are certain kinds of undercurrents, shall we say, in not just anaheim, but in the communities in california, as well as in other areas of the united states, and they include things like -- we do have anti-immigration issues that have come up basically, people are saying that they are stealing our jobs. that is common. anaheim was created as a winemaking colony in 1857. we still have associated businesses. we have the anaheim brewery. we have a few wineries are still in business. but we differently serve alcohol. we have

anaheim is a wet town. it is the place to, if you want to be served alcohol, but this is the time working up to the prohibition, and one of the klan picks up on is that there is the old-timers who are not looking forward to prohibition and prohibition supporters here in anaheim, so they actually piggybacked on to the publisher of one of our two orangeewspapers, the county plain dealer, which is very supportive of prohibition and which is basically blaming the city council at the time of dragging their feet and that they are not really supporting that, and basically forces the city council into passing an ordinance a year before prohibition goes into effect nationwide to basically trying out anaheim. now, it seems that very quickly happened that anaheim becomes known as the stronghold for the klan. one of the ways you can see that is this wonderful panoramic view that we have in our collection that was taken probably in the an activityof the kl in orange county. it is not taken in anaheim. it was actually ta

[bell ringing] [cheering] >> i think it is hard to measure the economic growth of knott's berry farm and disneyland coming-of-age. disneyland squeezed a lot of growth into a few short years. the parks combined completely change the focus of tourism in orange county. more than $10 billion is generated on the back of parks like knott's and disneyland. ♪ [applause] >> for all who come to this happy place, welcome. disneyland is your land. here we live found memories of the past and here, youth sees the promise of the future. >> no, anaheim did not start on july 15, 19 55 when disney opened. we had a live, vibrant community long before them. southern california was known as the valencia orange centric business. it was the center of the citrus business nationally. anaheim supported nine packing houses. these packing houses employed the community. they facilitated the growth of anaheim, the growth of this industry. these were well loved. by the 1950's, most of them had closed down. a mala

we are going to talk about anaheim in the 1920's. of timeific period where anaheim became known as klanaheim because of the ku klux klan and the presence in the county, particularly anaheim, and the activities that occurred. one of the ways you can see that is this wonderful panoramic view that we have in our collection that was taken probably at the activity inf klan anaheim. it was taken in huntington beach. one of the things i noticed first was the fact that they are not hiding their faces. they are all exposed. you will see that the front of the crowd are women, and that there are a number of young children that are dressed in the regalia as well. it is a significant number of people you are seeing in this group, so it does lend support to the fact that it was a large group. probably not in the thousands as was sometimes claimed by the clan, was certainly more than a couple hundred people i would think. host: we hope you tune in this weekend on c-span2's tv programming and c-span3's american history tv as the city's tour continue
